How to remove hydraulic tilt on Nissan 50

Post by sunshinecoasting »

Has anyone ever tried to remove the bottom pivot pin from a Nissan/Tohatsu 50HP tilt before? I need to remove my lift motor to remove rust and repaint but have to get this pin (marked in red) out to reach it. I have the nuts undone, used gallons of CRC and tried moving it with a 7 pound mash hammer with drift and even a pneumatic chisel to loosen it but it wont move. I dont want to use a puller in fear of cracking the cast alloy housing. Any ideas? this photo was taken before I started, yes piston is undone at top, no weight on shaft at all, thin thrust rod is removed, hydraulic assembly pivots forward and back nice and loose but not far enough to get to the bolts at the back of the electric motor, the pin I need to get out is about 1/2 in diameter and is only binding on the left and right side behind the nuts and washers at arrows. They fit in to a nylon bush insert (you can just see it behind the washers) and that is what seems to be my problem.

Is it important to totally remove the assembly to paint? Can you tilt it out and clean/paint it?

Here's a guy who is replacing the motor on the tilt unit without totally removing it.

Are you sure there is no weight on that pin? Maybe apply some heat?

Hi Sunshinecoasting!

If you don’t already know A Nissan 50 hp outboard motor service manual can be found on Amazon or eBay. Tohatsu also offers owner's manuals for their models, which are also Nissan branded in the US and Canada, as they are a rebadged Tohatsu product. so one nameplate manual can help with the other generally.

Tohatsu provides manual for free online: https://www.tohatsu.us/index.php?main_p ... Qi50tj6P83

Hope this helps!

Hi Russ, that's a later model than mine, mines a 1999, it has three bolts not 4 screws on the motor housing, one bolt is not accessible with the trim unit in place, it will not tilt back far enough because it hits the frame unfortunately. It definitely has no weight on it, it tilts by hand back forth very loosely but hits the left frame, it even rattles a little like it has play in it.

Thanks Over easy but I have the manual, it describes nothing about how to remove this pin, just says, "Remove pin" without any description of how to do that. I know that it is a Tohatsu as Nissan was never sold in Australia, all parts I have ever purchased for it have always been Tohatsu parts.
