Good boat repair connections - Seattle area

Post by aprangley »

Hi Friends,

It's Spring. And Lake Washington is calling!

I have an old swing keel Mac25 - a beauty. I am based in Seattle and am trying to find someone who could take a look at her and advise on a few modest repairs. I am happy to pay for this service.

Any chance any of you know someone or a company in the PNW who I can contact?

Issues are water enters into the boat - potentially through the keel swing bolt? Or some area around the keel casing. Also a couple of stays need replacing, engine mount needs raising, new blocks need installing...

Not much needed but it's too much for me and I need a little guidance. I have hit the limit of my knowledge of how to DIY these, and would value the opinion and maybe a little help from someone with a bit more comfort around this kind of solid trailerable old boat.

Thanks,
Ant

Thanks Russ.I did not know that. I will see who I can find.

And good to get a push on BWY. The preferred window for getting someone is helpful.

I'm not familiar with how the 25 is set up. But I can tell you that when I moved to saltwater (out of Lake Washington and into the Sound) and started sailing my 26x more aggressively (testing the limits of heeling, 4-6 ft waves, etc), the boat started collecting water in the bilge. I suspected my keel bolt/spindle was leaking or a crack in the bilge beneath the sole. But after a lot of experimentation I realized the water was spilling over the top of the internal keel housing located under the keel housing cover. (The boat is essentially top and bottom molds. There was a small gap where the upper and lower parts are joined together in the center of the boat. Or at least that's my perception of what was going on.) I temporarily removed the plastic plate at the base of the mast support and closed up the small gap from which the water came in using a couple of handfuls of Pettit Splash Zone. There has never been any additional problem with water intrusion.
