New to forum, 1st sailboat MacGregor 22 and have questions

Post by Willburrrr2003 »

Good day to all! I am the proud owner of a 1979 Macgregor 22 sailboat. I brought it home Sat May 31st. It appears that a previous owner has rigged it with the second headsail boom from a Venture of Newport boat, Basically making my Macgregor 22 a cutter rig with 2 headsails. I am currently having issues uploading pics, will try from home computer after work. I was hoping someone could show me in pics how to setup boat of my headsails?

Regards,

Will R.

Either they rigged it as a cutter with club footed staysail, Or they just rigged it as a club footed Jib, and it is still a sloop. Once I raise the mast the rigging should tell me a lot about which it is.

Thanks Jimmyt! I managed to figure out how to post pics and added some. You can see to club foot boom in a couple of the pics, it pivots off the Windlass? (not sure if correct term).

Will

Welcome to the forum!

Nice-looking boat there. It will be interesting to hear how the boat handles with that unorthodox rig.
The key to inner peace is to admit you have a problem and leave it at that.

Nice looking rig. Looks like everything is in pretty good shape.

It does appear that you may have a windlass on deck, but can’t see it well enough to tell. Is that pole actually connected to the top of the windlass? I thought it might be a gin pole, or a spinnaker pole, but if it’s connected to the top of the windlass, and there’s another forestay, your assumption may be correct. Is there a spot on, or near the windlass to attach an inner forestay? Are there blocks for sheeting a stay sail on deck? Or is there a curved track on deck for sheeting it?

Pics show it with a jib only, so no clues there.

Love a good mystery.

Good Morning Pitchpolehobie, To start with I'm thinking Lake Stevens or Lake Goodwin to learn the boat and get used to sailing it. Then from there I am only 10 minutes from the state park boat launch on Camano Island. That lets me put it in the water for the Puget sound, Near Camano, Whidby, Hat Island Port Gardner area, or even trailer to the San Juans and sail up there.

My guess is it's a self tending jib pole.

My Brother-In-Law lived on Camano Island (Sunrise Pkwy) and would launch is small dingy sailboat from the park. The tricky part for him was the currents could get dicey. He like to launch from Lake Stevens because....no tides.
That might be a good idea for starters until you get used to the boat. Also, I remember he said the ramp was busy on the weekends and that gets intimidating to have a line of people waiting.

If you haven't, I would strongly recommend a boating course like the Coast Guard or USPS. It will give you more confidence in simple boat handling. Probably nothing with sailing however.

Russ, beautiful waters around Camano Island, but yes going to start out with lake Steven's. Also already signed up for 3 day sailing class that starts June 28th out of Shilshoal Marina in Ballard . Each day is short time in classroom, and the rest of the day on the waters of puget sound sailing. Since Boeing is paying for the class I figured sign up for first class available. I will sign up for the intermediate class right after. Once I start putting into to the sound for sailing, the tide charts will be a big part of my planning so that I an not fighting the tides.

Will R.
