Russ, beautiful waters around Camano Island, but yes going to start out with lake Steven's. Also already signed up for 3 day sailing class that starts June 28th out of Shilshoal Marina in Ballard . Each day is short time in classroom, and the rest of the day on the waters of puget sound sailing. Since Boeing is paying for the class I figured sign up for first class available. I will sign up for the intermediate class right after. Once I start putting into to the sound for sailing, the tide charts will be a big part of my planning so that I an not fighting the tides.

Excellent plan.
Sailing class with time on the water is fantastic. My BIL didn't do that. He should. I'm going to tell him about your class. He "reads" and printed/laminated sheets about points of sail to keep in his sailing dinghy. I told him that is useless as you need to KNOW what to do before heading out. Referrign to a piece of paper as the wind is changing is not a good plan.
If the class doesn't teach boating rules and procedures you should supplement with more classes. Even youtube or online would be good.
I've never boated on Puget sound, but I've heard currents can rip through some places, so knowing more about local waters is important. Make friends with other boaters and learn.

Will the jib clear the mast with the self-tending rig attached. Previous owner photo doesn’t show it rigged that way.
Jimmyt, I won't know the answer to that until I try to rig the sail to it. It looks like it was a work in progress. Also it wasn't the guy I bought it from, it was a previous owner before him. He had wound up with the Mac 22's in his front yard, getting rid of the other two before I got the chance to get the third one he had left, aside from the Mac 25 he had for his enjoyment. but now I have an Idea of how to rig it with what the PPO(Previous Previous Owner ) has mounted to the deck. Instead of just bare fairleads he has blocks attached to them and looks like they were meant to route that line down the left side back to the cockpit. I still haven't had the chance to try and raise the mast, I do see one of the lines, not sure if stay or shroud line yet as need to untangle and lay out the lines, but that one line has broken and frayed strands so I know I will need to replace it. Luckily I have spare mast with all the standing rigging. Hopefully the counterpart's line is in good shape.
