Now considering removing the helm seat entirely. I never sit there, I frequently board the boat from the dingy through the transom and the seat is in the way. The seat is integrated into the canvas cockpit enclosure, but I'm sure I can figure out a fix for that. My only concern is that I don't want to fall out the back of the boat when things get bouncy. Tethering reduces the risk, but that seems like a cumbersome solution to use 100% of the time.
I could glass in a couple of sturdy strips on either side of the transom and install transom guard wires (probably dyneema with clips on either end). I would like to avoid installing additional inspection hatches for backing plates and am confident I can make it sufficiently sturdy using steel brackets encased in multiple layers of fiberglass.
Do you know of an examples of someone that has done something like this specifically to their Macgregor. Any helpful ideas? I welcome expert or experienced advice.
(I'm a sailboat or a motorcruiser at hull speed. I recently removed my 60 HP and 6 HP and replaced them with a 20, 9.9 and 1300w electric. Top speed about 11 knots, but I rarely go over 7 knots, so I will never be driving the boat with the bow raised like it's a motorboat.)
