Another Katrina casualty

Post by mike »

I heard yesterday that the much loved West Rigolets Lighthouse in Lake Pontchartrain is gone.

Yes, I know that amongst the massive destruction in Louisiana and along the Gulf Coast, the loss of this little structure is really insignificant, but nonetheless, I am deeply saddened by its demise.

Also, the Ship Island Lighthouse (which was actually a replica, the original was burned down in the 1970s I think) was destroyed.

We have fond memories of having anchored in front of the lighthouse on our summer trips last year and this year (just a month or two ago)... didn't think that would be the last time we saw it.

Isn't the lake being poisoned by all the flood water they are pumping back into it?

Yes, but there's not a lot of choice. Someone was suggesting that it just be pumped into the Mississippi River instead, but many communities draw their drinking water from the river, and the nasty water would also probably harm the marshlands downriver.

However, surprisingly, the head guy for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation didn't sound overly concerned when I heard him on the radio a few days ago. He acknowledged that in the short term, the lake is going to take a big hit, but that it will heal itself.

The reports of the "toxic stew" and the "Superfund Site" that is New Orleans are somewhat overstated. Yes, it's filled with fecal coliform and e. coli - at levels that would cause beaches to be closed to swimming in California or on the Great Lakes. Yeah, there are hydrocarbons in the water. But, the key to understanding the problem is to understand 1) the actual concentations of the contaminants present, and 2) the fate mechanism for each. The biological stuff and the hydrocarbon will biodegrade. Additionally, at the next high river, expect the Corps to open the Bonne Carre spillway to "flush" the Lake. Not neat, but workable. It will take a little time. Could have been worse.

My Mac normally lives at the Inner Habor Marina; however, it was out of the water to get some service on the Honda OB in Marrero. Saw the yard last week, and the boat looked fine. Not in a pile with the rest of the boats at Westend.

Nasty video -what was up with those cops anyway?

I think the Creator will forgive those who 'looted' food and water for their families and loved one. Plasma TVs are not covered under this program.

I was in Rochester airport the the other day and a woman in front of me in line gave the kiosk attendant all kinds of s*** about her latte being too hot, then too cold, so on and so on.

SHe waits until her back is turned, then takes a banana from the pile on the counter and puts it in her purse. She doesnt realise Im behind her, turns, jumps, then smiles and walks away..

Im 44 and thought I could handle most every social occasion, but I fumbled this one. Sorta wishing I had invited her to discuss this with the cops and miss her flight...

I took the dharmic approach and left a big tip on my hot dog and soda. Next day I closed a 700k blue bird order that covered my 'loss'

Catigale,
you handled the situation fine... She will have her own punishment, the next time she has to argue about her latte.... and prolly every time she has any dealings with other people, she creates her own punishment. What a pile of bad karma she is making, even is she "pays" as she goes.

You gotta wonder if the complaints about her Latte weren't fabricated to setup her theft...

You'd be surprised to how much work some people will put into "getting away" with something...
