thru-hull location

Post by Joe »

I will be installing a holding tank, y valve, macerator pump, deck pump out and 1" thru-hull on my 05 M. I am not certain as to where the thru-hull should be located. Some info recommends 5" to 6"above the water line and other articles have recomended below the water line. Would appreciate help.

I've never seen (or would want to see/smell) an above the water line thru-hull head output. To the best of my knowledge, these are installed below the water line in traditional sailboats. They also typically have sea water intakes for the heads below the WL.

From my understanding, if you put the holding tank pump out above waterline you will need to clean the hull after every dump. Make sure that the pump out is farther aft of the intake.
Just a Question - Where do you plan to go that you will be able to use the thru-hull holding tank output?
You could find a small bucket that will fit inside the bowl and dump when needed.

Thanks for the information. My thoughts on the thru-hull were the same as yours but just wanted confirmation.
I'm hoping that I never have to use the thru-hull pump out but wanted the option.

I think I would put this where I put my bilge pump through hull - on the stern transom..you could motor while you dump and stay out of the waste stream.

To rinse afterwards, just clear the waste stream, then reverse for a few moments to slap the transom with fresh water.

IMHO putting it below waterline is just inviting a flooded hull.

Do you have lakes where you can dump legally in SASK???

Those kits with the toilet seat that fits over a bucket with a liner bag look interesting. Not sure what you do with the bag of goodies at the end of the day though, unless maybe fling them at jet skis with a water balloon launcher.

Kidding of course.

I bought a cheap toilet seat, and put some rubber bumpers on the underside so it just fits on the top of a nice clean 5 gal. bucket. Walmart 8 gal. bags, and your all set. What a treat not to have to go up to the bathrooms on rainy cold days and then decide that I didn't have to go after all. Also , my bathroom is a smoking allowed room.

Whats with the buckets and bags. What would I do with this crap on a 2 or 3 day cruise? I doubt if any one would go cruising with me. At least with a holding tank I can get it sucked out at the next marina or when needed.

Our lakes in Saskatchewan our so pristine that you wouldn,t think of dumping anything overboard.

Greg. Its only once a day. After a smoke, coffee and bucket business, it goes in the dumpster on my morning walk. I piped a hose into my sink drain, with a funnel. for my other nasty business.
