Well now, I must say that I would have just about everything that has been stated by Moe, Catagale and Sloop John B.
I know for sure I would have my Scot / Irish self a load of MacWine (RED), Mac Irish Whiskey and Mac Beer (Killians) cause ya never know what will happen on a three hour tour ....Right Gillian and the Skipper!

Interesting thread...and I always thought my boat was somewhat marginally equipped. But now I see that I am quite fortunate to have virtually all of these extra things already on my boat, so I guess in reality I am quite well equipped...even if I haven't quite finished installing my permanent sound system and still use a portable sound and DVD system!

There is another thing to mention here, especially when speaking of the safety items. You have to know EXACTLY where everything is!!!. The truth of the matter is that I have so many nooks and crannies on this boat, that a lot of stuff gets stashed and not used for a very long time. If you are in an emergency, and you can't remember where you put your spot light or your hull plugs or whatever, it won't be much good to you. I've been in those situations, so now I try to just peruse through each nook and cranny every few months to try to mentally remember where things are. In an emergency, you will need to know exactly where something is by memory..there will be no time to start looking through all your storage areas individually. Keeping an inventory list may be useful...provided you know exactly where THAT is in case of emergency.

Well, I can't offer a cure for not knowing where stuff is, but one thing we do is to label the top of every container with the contents and quantities. This serves two purposes - finding things much easier and it makes inventory & restocking a snap, too.

We keep a spreadsheet printout with the contents of every locker on the head door...this serves many purposes

1 you can figure out what you do and dont use

2 You can estimate your weight and balance of the boat if thats important to you

3 You (AND YOUR GUESTS) can find something without a lot of back and forth while you are at the helm.

4 If you have an insurance claim (gulp) you wont forget anything.

Its also handy to keep track of what devices need batteries or other attention.

JUst dont let the Admiral ever total up the cost....unless you have baubels in your back pocket....

My system is to just keep adding crap and forget about it. Its like XMAS when you find something and think wow I forgot I had that. My favorite saying is "I have one of those somewhere on the boat" The reason most captains go down with the ship is they are looking for that thing a ma jig as the boat slips below the surface. Thats me.
I took all the stuff out of the bins once and couldnt believe how much stuff was in them. If the coast guard wanted to search my boat it would take them all day. I had to redraw the water line 5 times already.

But I know exactly where everything is ITS ON THE BOAT.

If I want to find something I ask karen to go get it, as I drive the boat, It goes like this. Karen can you get the whatchamacallit its down below.
she says where? I say its down there somewhere. She says where exactly? I say its down there somewhere, the boats not that big go look will ya? She comes back an hour latter with the whatsamaclaait. I use it and then ask her to put it back. She says where? I say where you found it. Then its lost again for the next time.

I also have that other problem though ... I might remember that I bought something,
but never sure if it's on the boat, back of the pickup, or in the garage.

We spent the first 3 years we had the boat trying to sink it by buying everything for it including the kitchen sink, most everything you could think of was viewed as a necessity and everytime we went to the store and the kids wanted something they figured out all they had to do was say "its for the boat" and the chances of getting it went up about 60 %.

Now weve spent the last 5 years figuring out what else we could leave off the boat.

When I gut the boat every year for cleaning, I find stuff that I didnt use all year and go "oh yeah there it is", thats a good indicator that we didnt need it.

We plan to sail the coastal areas of BC... the inlets between Victoria BC and Vancouver... Not sure about the straits of Juan de [email protected]?
Take it by trailer to perhaps a lake or two.. We want to live on board... do a few months at one marina.. then another...during the tourist season... In the winter, we'd take up camp at 1 marina. Enroll in a local Y club for some winter activity.. stuff like that... We sell/create artsey stuff to generate some added income in the warmer months....

We have no pets.. no kids (that will be on board)... so its just me and my sweetheart.. by the way He and I are short.. so head room isnt a problem.. Well not real short. but..we are twin geminis... and a perfect match... So glad we found each other after all the years of wrong relationships... on both sides.. ... Amazing how 2 lives can come together on one path ....(blissful sigh)

Buy another boat ...heck honey....its already outfitted..one or two trips to West Marine, tops!!

In seriousness, we (in true spirit of REUSE REDUCE RECYCLE) resurrected Grandad's old Island 17 and I found plenty of stuff like bilge pumps, flares, etc that we could use from the extra stash..
