Cool Animated website for tying knots

Post by deacm »

If you need a refresher on knot-tying or want to keep your kids busy some rainy afternoon, check out this website from a scout group in England. I always had trouble looking at 'in sequence' static pictures of "How to Tie Knot" books but this one site is pretty slick. Enjoy

This is so cool! I always have a mental block for the clove hitch - don't know why, but just do. The boline is simply the most useful knot.

Ashley's book of knots is another great source, but it's in the old fashioned paper form :)

How come when you see a bowline it is so simple - UNTIL you have nothing to copy it off!! I cannot do one with out a diagram.

I know what you mean, that's why I have to recite to myself the following mantra everytime I do a bowline : "Rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree and back down the hole".........yep, everything I know, I learned in kindergarten ;-)

How did those of you from other countries learn to tie the bowline?
I sold a boat to a man that came from Russia, where the bear comes out of the hole, goes around the tree, and goes back into the hole
A customer that had come from Germany said the snake comes out of the lake, it goes around the palm tree, and goes back into the lake.

Well, here near Punxsutawney, PA on February 2nd we say: " The groundhog comes out of the hole, goes around the tree and BETTER go back down the hole or else there will be six more weeks of winter" ..............which wreaks havoc for early boat launches ;-)

I love the animated sites, helps me more than just the written instructions. So now at night, I sit with printed instructions - just in case - and practice the bowline, clove hitch, and a couple of others. On my last visit to WM to purchase some line, the salesman suggested (for those of us in non-sailing winter months) practicing knots and splicing so you don't forget. Since we are just beginners I thought that was a good suggestion.
