Dont like that gas generator being stored in the bilge, Rich...a fuel leak would put you in a classic situation for a bad boat fire. At least you should have a fuel vapour sniffer alarm in your bilge if you are going to do this...

Easy to follow your "isolation" logic, Rich ... exhaust aft, controls forward, and a full enclosure. Considering that the rubber feet interlock, it seems a terrific solution to me, and the ratchet-strap would make it perfect.
A great idea, quick 'n easy to copy!

Agreed, Steph - I had the same thought. The only thing I can say in defense is that the cap on the generator has a vent-lock, so with that closed you won't get much leaking of vapor, and should an actual liquid leak occur the vent being closed will greatly limit the amount that can leak out. All the same, I keep mine stored under the transom seat for just that reason.

On the 26M you could attach a lanyard from the top of the mast carrier to the generator.

Jack how many amps?

Post by flutterbye »

Jack,
How many amps does your Vector charger give your batteries when your EU2000 is running? I'm curious because I've got the same generator and charger and am looking to do something similar with mine. My first post- thanks for a great site!
Thanks,
Robin :macm:

No surprise that he's all out. :(

Generators on Board

Post by Tahoe Jack »

Flutterbye.....in response to your question...in my experience the computer in the Vector actually controls the charging rates...whether AC is supplied by AC shorepower or generator. For example, if your batts are down by one-quarter or so and you set initial charge at 30A....within minutes the Vector internal computer will reduce the charge rate..sometimes down to 5A or so. I think the generator will handle all the Vector asks for. If you are motor sailing, the motor will keep the batts up....if you are at anchor for extended time...I use the generator AC directly to cooking loads etc....and a bit more if needed to top the batts. Hope this helps. Welcome aboard. 8) Jack

Hi John,
How is that Kipor generator holding up for you? Can you compare the noise level to a similar Honda unit? At the price you paid it seems hard to go wrong in most any case. I just joined rbauction and will try to pick one of these up at the Orlando, FL auction on October 6.

once again I've posted without doing an adequate search first. I see John and other have discussed the relative noise of the kipor vs honda in another thread. I should know better by now. and the kipor 1000's I saw once on the auction site seem to have disappeared. :(

I store my Honda EU1000i behind the companionway ladder (on top of the battery opening) in the cabin. I close the vent on the gas and have never had a leak or smelled gas. I usually run it on the dock if we're slipped or in the cockpit being careful of the exhaust (CO plus it can discolor the gelcoat).

On disappointment: the generator does not put out the power advertized taking into account their derating formula for altitude. I bought it new.

Rich

I'm very happy with my kipor their is a dealer not to far from me I am a licenced mechanic to trade although I do not pull wrenches any more "except at home" I supervise those who do at my job , so fixing these things is not a problem . but I find if I can get it for the right price and I did, 10yrs from now if I have any problems with it the parts will usualy cost more than I paid for it. So I,d just go looking for another new one at the auction will most likely be better by then with newer tech. !!!!

Cheers John
