Running light float test

Post by Mikebe »

I float tested the cover for my front (red/green) running light this weekend. It doesn't float. :(

So far this season, I have also float tested a pair of glasses, a digital camera, and a swiss army knife. None of them floated. :( :x

Anyway, I have (had) the standard front running light on my 07 M and am now looking for a replacement. If anyone knows which one I need to order from West Marine (or elsewhere) that fits on my M, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

I was unpleasently surprised this weekend when adjusting my shroud tensions I lost a crescent wrench and a screwdriver! Neither one floated. I tried retrieving them with a magnet but no luck; they're non-magnetic too!? It's hard to find good tools!

My dealer told me its made by Aqua Signal.
Checked West Marine, looks like it has to be WM model # 237263 AquaSignal

Local store has one in stock... :)

so I'm going with it. It will fit, or I will make it fit.

Umm... just don't drop your sledge hammer while you're 'making it fit', eh? :)

Sledge hammers sink too?!?!

Something about Monty Python, witches, ducks, and "very small rocks" comes to mind

Regarding boat tools, very sorry to report this two edged sword. If the magnet doesn't work, maybe they're stainless? But I think the magnet SHOULD work!

They look like stainless, but automotive tools are RARELY made of SS (maybe never?). So the bad news is that most automotive tools DO rust in the salty atmosphere. :x The good news is, your magnet was the right bait, just didn't get close enough to catch them.

Maybe they don't use SS because it's too brittle for hand tools? While trying to turn a rusty screw, I actually snapped-off the tip of a straight-edged screwdriver last week (Craftsman!). Sometimes tools are marked 'chrome vanadium' (not sure exactly what that means) and usually they're marked 'hardened'. Anyhow, the magnet works.

We’ve donated our share of boating valuables to the briny depths, and sometimes (seldom) we’ve recovered things with a magnet. (Our best luck with a powerful tow-truck portable light set magnet; those magnets grab anything metallic if you can get close)
At the marina we call and pay our bottom cleaning agent, he finds more than we’ve dropped, asks for nothing but we always make sure his efforts are rewarded.

I'll start doing that more. I did have a lanyard on my expensive shroud tension gauge but I never even dropped it so I don't have the satisfaction of good foresight!
