Father's Day Sail Sunday June 17th, Marina Del Rey (MDR)

Post by Mark Karagianis »

Continuing our annual family tradition, we're launching 9:30 am out of MDR for a full day sail. Direction? - where ever there's wind. I'm taking my two sons and future (maybe) son-in-law. if you want to join us in your boat, that would be great. We plan to have a BBQ & Greg's guitar serenade on the ramp parking lot afterwards, around 7PM. Looks like there will be lots of Macs about Friday & Saturday (see neighboring thread) so hope that we'll have some company. We'll bring an inflatable to tow also.

We'll be there from Friday to Sunday. But we'll have to get back on the trailer no later than 2:00 on Sunday. Putting the boat to bed, then driving home to arrive before dark is our usual last day plan.
See you there.

This trip was one of the best. Sailing was absolutely perfect. Mark and I took our boats south, sailed fast against the swell for a couple hours.
The swell was up and there were some wind waves and chop but the ride was still nice and fast. making the turn to go home is when the sailing was
the best. You know one of those sails where the boat is moving extremely fast and it feels like its hardly moving at all. Heeling at 10-15 deg and showing 5.5-6.5mph speed all the way back. Very comfortable and hardly any input to the steering. When we got back put the macs on the trailer, Mark and I toasted the day with a large glass of ice filled Jack.
Marks kids are great They all went sailing with their dad for fathers day and had a great time. Next year Ill rent some kids to go with me.

Met two more Mac people right before we took off an X guy who was just getting back from the Island and Gary in his brand new 07 Mac. loaded with bikes on the bow. (Gary says he reads the board) so Gary say hi to the folks here. Mac people are the nicest people.

Macs are all over the place now. There are at least 5 more new macs in the mast up area. One brand new mac has a 8hp motor. (Any one from
this board?)

I think ill try and set up an event for the 4th. although it will be crazy at the ramp that day we can work around it using the mast up storage area after the sail.

wow what a day thanks for setting it up Mark.

Hey, we saw you guys around 2pm heading south around the southern most LAX border or so. (In front, it looked like to me 8))
We were coming back from Long Beach about 1 1/2 miles further out from you. Sorry we missed the chance to meet Mark and more Mac guys. Our plans changed late Thursday, so we tried the Long Beach sail. You were right on the money with your hook suggestion. We anchored there Friday and Saturday nights. Perfect! Thanks for the fishing tips too. Caught and released something, dunno what they were.
The wind was perfect :D .

Well frank if the weather holds that soar throat just might go on for a few more weeks. By the way Frank when are you going to pop in on us at MDR
you are not that far away you know????????

Bill yup I was in front then later let mark pass me...next time you see us give a call on 68 we most always stay on that channel. Actually mark is a better sailor then me and caught me and passed.

Ill be out long beach area in my old boat (one I sold) to a friend be kind of strange run around as the passenger. again 68 if anyone around, Ill stop by and say hi...That will be next wed the 27th, not this one coming up.

Mike - You're too kind. It was great sailing with you. The only reason that I was very slightly faster than you is because I was able to move four of my five crew up onto the rail (rail meat!) with one down below on the windward side of the cabin. I figure my 750 pounds of crew and 100 pounds of carry-on (including three guitars - don't ask) just about equal your probably 900 pounds of permanent boat stuff and only one crew. As I've seen before, the self-steering is a really great equalizer. I'm gonna hafta get that someday . . . . .

Also, I tend to trim with the jib first, possibly getting some jib-induced luff now and then in my main. You seem to take the opposite approach, trimming main first and having a softer jib. Interesting, because I heel more, but then have to have more steering angle and thence more drag.

Next time, while we discuss this, we have to drink the Jack faster, 'cause who wants the water? How about 4th of July?
