Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend!
We had a very nice sail today on SF Bay. Conditions were light in the morning, so we motored about 6 nm south from Redwood City to the old Dumbarton Railroad Bridge. This is all in south SF Bay, between San Jose and SF. We took a little break, then turned around, and came back through the bridges. Then, the wind kicked up, as it usually does in late morning. We sailed the rest of the way back to Redwood Creek on a close reach in about 15 kts of wind. The ebb tide had kicked in, and helped us along nicely, but it also kicked up some steep waves, about 2-3 ft and whitecaps. I'm happy to say that I'm getting more comfortable sailing the boat in more challenging conditions. The boat (and crew!) handled it very well.

Check out the You Tube video:

Here is our sailing track. Wind was from the NW, and our sailing track was on a NW course. We tacked 12 times in 6 nm due to the narrow channel in South SF Bay:

Ive never done the South Sf bay, but have sailed out of Berkeley many times...usually angel island, Alcatraz, and SF wharf area if I can get that in in one day.

Cat,
It's nice sailing up there because the bay is wide open. I live in San Jose, so to slip the boat up there would be a really long drive. South bay has a narrow channel, so a chartplotter is very handy!

Cheers,
Roger

Our club, Beaconsfield Yacht club near Montreal, hosted the Shark Worlds this year. Beautiful to see the 60 or so one designs out there.

Rob, I noticed your roller furling main. Can you give some details about the installation and its performance. Got any pictures from a side angle?

Best i could find for the moment. Sorry about the ugly thing in the middle :) I haven't uploaded our vacation pictures yet where I probably have a better shot of the system.

I had the installation done by our club shipwright who said it was pretty straightforward. The cost of the unit was about $1800 but that does not cover the new custom sail that set me back closer to $2000 extra.

For performance I seriously did not find a significant difference, but then again, I am not a racer. As for convenience, it has been huge. With a child often aboard (now 5 years old), it is great not to have to leave the cockpit and reefing is a really easy. I find that I now always use both sails where in the past I might have only unfurled the genoa - so performance in that respect has improved dramatically. Lowering the mast requires a little prudence not to gouge the hatch with that very solid drum. It's important to turn the mast. I have seen another system on this site that attaches to the actual mast and the sail rolls inside of it. Not sure about the weight difference. My first choice was Mike Inmon's in-boom roller but, at the time, he was not set up to send out a kit. He was just selling them as an option on new boats. It is bound to be better for the Mac as the added weight is far lower than my system and removing the boom with a furled sail for trailoring must be much easier. My boat sits in a marina slip all season so that is not usually an issue for me.

It depends on your crew, competence and transport whether it is worth it or not but for me I would never go back to a standard rig with no furler. I am happy I went for it.

Curious, I saw a lot of black spots on the last picture and zoomed in. Are those horse flies?

That pic was from earlier in the season when shad-flies were at their peak. It was dangerous to even keep your mouth open. :) They are harmless but really annoying.

For a slide show of our trip from Montreal-Ottawa-Rideau Canal-Kingston-1000 Islands-Montreal , click the ling below. I tried to embed it but no luck.

It was good fun. Docking skills have improved with the passing of 53 locks as well as all the islands and about 350kn of travel.

I thought we were good, then we met a chap from Hamburg who crossed the Atlantic alone on a 20 foot sailboat. He got from the Canaries to Martinique in 19 days, went up to NY and the Hudson to the St-Laurence river, down the canal and was on his way to do the Trent-Severn.

I scrolled down this page just looking at the pics, not reading text. It took me a few minutes to realize that Ray's pic is a painting! :!:
