Hey G (and J) - Sorry about the gremlins - but that was a quick repair on the rudders, must be some MacGiverin' goin' on in that Macgregor . I did notice the boat hook up on deck when you were flying through the water in one of your videos; I was thinking, "that boat hook sure would not stay in that place on my boat for long". So as it turns out it didn't in your's either (is that how you lost it, it slid off)?

Main sail tears were where reefed at the boom maybe ?

I have kept my boat hooks on the deck since 2006.
They never fall overboard, no matter what the heel.
Mine got kicked off by me when I was on deck trying to take down the main in heavy seas.
I was bouncing all over trying not to fall in
Lost my footing and flipped off the boat hook with my foot.
Oh well, thats what spares are for

The sail tares were not from reefing
They are from flaking at the end of the day
My main is so beat up
She tares very easily
So pulling from the luff while flaking causes it to rip like tissue paper
A new main is on my to do list
I just have to decide what type and from where...

Are the IDA rudders weaker than stock? I thought they were the ultimate upgrade... So they give up strength for speed? Are they solid plastic?

Just curious, feel free to bash away, why do you guys maintain so much heel? I thought anything past 20° was just stressing your rig with no added speed. Are you doing it to spill wind without reefing? Do you have to set your mast rake for Lee helm in normal conditions to maintain 30-40° without rounding up?

I wanted to play 20 questions but only got to six.....

Yup bilge scum on me for not reading your post carefully and noticing that you were reefed.

I knew the chines on the hull were rounder than the but never dreamed that it would add 10° to the optimum heel angle. It makes sense and explains a lot.

Well now that IDA rudders are off the wish list I can bump a few mods up the list. I have a 96 and IDAs would have required new brackets and gudgeons ++.

A big thank you for all your pics and videos as well. I'm feeling the need for a go pro or similar camera. Last year's best sail the admiral looked at me with disdain when I was about to make a video of us doing a consistent 6 knots so I didn't. A year later I still wish I did.

Sure I might be able to get another set FOC with lifetime warranty

But I would not use them, and would not sell them to another sailor knowing what will happen to them

I see your point, G, but questionable ethics would only come into play if you did NOT tell the buyer the story, (happy to see that that would not be the case, good for you, BTW). Otherwise, there might be someone willing to exchange a few years' improved sailing performance for the risk of fracture?... or even someone on this forum after reading this - as a backup set.

Also - isn't there a chance that there was an issue (that could be unique to your set or others produced at that time) such as inadequate UV protection in the material (causing embrittlement over time)? I would at least contact the supplier and let them know (they likely WANT to know about this happening to their product). It could even be something like the manufacturer (if third party) was being careless and substituting a cheaper material (unbeknownst to their customer), without telling the seller. Many scenarios are possible here.

I've had a few products on the consumer market, and if people are happy with them, I ask them to tell others. If they aren't happy with it, I want them to tell me, and I'll do what I can to make them happy with it, and so I can make ongoing process improvements in the product if needed. I don't think that line of thought is at all unique to me.
