the cost of materials on such a job would be low,the labour costs would be the issue.If you felt confident enough to prep the job as far as the second primer then the base coat and clear done by a professional would achieve the desired result at minimum cost.

We had some gel damage on the foredeck stripe from the previous owner when we purchased this boat, and knew that we wanted to get rid of the white lines in the gray stripe. They worked on the stripe areas, sanding and filling to get them smooth which took a lot of hours. Total cost was about $1400, which included all the black stripes above the rub rail. (Could be less if there were less work getting the surface smooth) Was more than we really wanted to spend, but she does look really nice sitting on the water. Plus you really notice how the Macgregor black fades by looking at the 2007 M sitting at the dock next to us. One coat of automotive wax at the beginning of the season and we've done nothing but deck washing since and it's dark and shiny. I'll have to get a decent picture next time we're to the lake and post.

The black striping along the coach roof is definitely an inherent problem with both the 26x and 26m.

The problem is with the quantity and quality of the gelcoat the factory uses when the boat is built. Simply put, they do not use enough of it. It's a cost savings move that I really have a problem with.

We sell 40 to 50 new boats a year and all arrive with the gelcoat faded to some degree. We try to tell all buyers to pay attention to this fact and wax often as eventually the situation will get worse over time.

The only way to get a nice, long lasting shine is to re-paint the striping. To get the best results you need to use a special "LP" paint like Awlgip's to get the job done. It is not a hard job and you do not need an expensive sprayer. Two people and two brushes will give you excellent results. Purchase the paint (it is a two-part system) and have one person apply it with a small inexpensive roller. The second person follows right behind you with a good oxtail type brush with tip to eliminate any air bubbles or drips. It dries real fast.

Cost? You should be able to paint an entire boat (sides) for around $10.00 a foot so the coach roof stripe alone will be very inexpensive.

I would suggest you experiment before actually starting the job. An old piece of fiberglass will be fine. You can also stand up a sheet of window glass. Using glass is great because it will also insure that you have your paint/thinner ratio correct.

What about that product "glass X"? I remember someone on the board having excellant results on the black stripes as well as the gel coat, I was thinking about trying it.

You're prolly referring to New Glass II, or its competitor called PoliGlow.
I think they're better solutions than monthly wax jobs, but not as good as painting.
I had a neighborhood teen apply PoliGlow, but that was a mistake, and it now needs a total R&R.
The stuff requires application by a well-motivated owner!

This is what I did a month ago . The kit cost under 100$ and the boat still looks good but the stripes are not as shinny. Will probably give it another treatment this month.

Have you applied Awlgrip? If so, was it easy to apply?

I use Gel Gloss from Home Deport . $7 and its in pink can. I just pulled my boat on Monday and after 5 months in the water it needed a wax job. The Gel Gloss made the hull look new again. In fact, I was going to advise the board today of this product in a seperate post.

I have not used AwlGrip, but I've seen it on Pacific Seacraft and other yachts in dark colors and it looked like new after many years. I've also read quite a few articles on its application. While I wouldn't consider it difficult, it does require considerable attention to detail in both prep and application. From what I've seen, that effort is well worth it. Google it and read others' lessons learned.

Napa Paint store will mix any color you desire and load it in 14 oz spray cans for you. Far beyond the quality of paint you would be able to buy from Ace Home Depot etc. OOOoppppss dont forget to clean really well. Final clean is prep-sol but in a pinch mineral spirit will work. apply wet and remove the M.S. with a dry cloth. You dont want to just smear contaminates and let they dry on the surface you just smeared it .... M.S. / Prep-sol put's contaminates into solution and they will float to the surface and then you wipe them off ( before it dries ) with a dry clean rag ACTUALLY a Good Paper Shop Towel . I ruined a very expensive custom paint job this summer when I used fresh washed clean rags. TIDE has fabric softener in it and it might as well have been GREASE! OOpppss big time do over $$$$$$$$$$$$$. Hope this helps you. Might I add dont wait for more than a few minutes to remove tape so you dont get sharp edges that chip. pull tape back and down at a severe angle as well. Sorry . . one more bit of advice . Should you get a drip or a run keep a roll of masking tape handy . Pull off a strip and hold it long / wide and just barely touch the run with it . It will pick up the run and you can then over spray the area to match. If you have questions I can help with PM me so I see your needing answers.
