Not to mention putting your weight in the V-berth causes excessive pendulum motion over the hull whereas putting your weight aft puts your weight in the flattest portion of the hull and the lowest portion of the hull thereby lowering the center of gravity and creating a more stable boat while at anchor and asleep. Go figure.....
Let me be perfectly clear the forward berth is when I am alone  and mostly when its hot and the wonderful hatch is open with a bug screen thingy on it. The rear berth is for when I have company. :P

Got my wheel pilot yesterday.. I am reading all the manuals first and then I guess the next step is installing the wheel !

Q1,

Do the instructions specify what size circuit breaker to hook that thing up to? I am going to pull the trigger on a new 8-position panel and a couple extra circuit breakers for it when I can confirm the size I need. Dad is searching my documentation as I type this.

Thanks,
Jim

Smart pilot S1 wheel pilot Commissioning Guide says:
12V DC
15A fuse at panel
10A circuit breaker

I was not planning on changing my circuit breakers , just adding it on to my main panel. I already have separate breaker panel for shore power interior battery charger and 12v and 110 wall plugs. Think it could share the mast light fuse.

We bought our 26X now an unbelievable 5 seasons past (2005); it was an accidental find while looking at another trailer sailor. After a couple of days of research, we beat out another very unhappy next door neighbor who was waiting for the 70+ year old owner to sell. We actually did not know about the M at the time.

I can't say enough great things about our boat and how many forever family memories it has delivered for a ridiculously low annual cost (nearly zero maintenance).

I learned to sail racing Hobbie Cats and really like fast everything (cars, planes, etc.). This boat is NOT fast but gets our family on the water either wakeboarding or sailing on long weekends.

If you are buying this boat for speed, then do not buy this boat. All the funny blather about which version is faster is in jest between the various later models (X vs. M). Either boat will perform well in the hands of a capable sailor.

Check out the layouts between the models then decide.

Personally, I like the larger cockpit area on the X, larger head with a soon to be shower, swing keel (lifesaver in our shallow area), low used boat cost (if we sold today the bank would hand us money) accompanied by a used boat mentality that allows you to mod/scratch without going into convulsions.

Terry,

When I purchased my 05 M, I had the dealer install everything I thought I wanted. I knew that I just would not do it myself. I spend all day fixing other peoples problems. The dealer stood behind his subcontractors work. I had several complaints, and everyone of those complaints were rectified. That's what I expected should be done with a new boat, and it was.

Here is the story from my dads memoirs of April 8th,

"On that same afternoon our lookouts spotted four Japanese planes coming in out of the setting sun, a favorite kamikaze trick. It appeared three of these planes intended to attack us. The fourth (never visually identified) retired without attacking. So we now had three enemy planes in the vicinity and each available for inflicting damaged to our ship. Being isolated in my radar shack, I had limited access to the events going on.. Suddenly, one of the planes began diving.

I was following on my spotting scope in my radar receiver room. I could clearly discern shells going towards the target as each plane approached us. Soon one of the planes was in range of our smaller 40-mm guns and they opened fire adding to the din. The plane kept coming and soon all our guns including the 20-mm ones were firing. Then I thought I heard pistol shots. I learned later that as a plane approached close enough, our officers on the bridge were actually firing at it with their side arms.

The plane-riddled with bullets crashed into us amidships near the waterline on the port side abreast of the forward fire room. The gig (Captain's lifeboat) took some of the shock and was carried away. This may have made the difference between the plane flying through us or not.

We suffered loss of light and power which rendered radars and fire control equipment inoperative and some flooding. I found myself in the dark with only my sound-powered headphones operable. I could hear the pandemonium going on outside my door as damage control began. The crash site was about fifty feet from my radar shack.. Luckily, the impact was on our armor plate-a few feet higher it would have taken out a large section of the thinner aluminum plate superstructure causing horrendous death. and injuries, including mine.

The remaining planes maneuvered for attack. It seemed endless before power was regained. Finally, the emergency generators came on line and lighting restored.

But the Mark 12 fire control radar failed to come on! I was puzzled but then the fire control man in the director solved the mystery. When the plane had exploded, it knocked off the cover of the fire control box. Equipment covers are designed with interlocks which shut off the high voltage when the equipment is opened for repair. The fire control radar had been rendered useless by the accidental opening of the box! As soon as power was restored, the Skipper ordered us to steam in large circles to make it difficult for any remaining planes to hit us.

I still had the problem of the fire-control radar and I agonized on how I could regain it. Suddenly I hit upon an idea. I quickly opened the drawer containing the Mark 12 power supply and closed the high voltage relay with my hand. Power was immediately restored.

Great, we have power again, shouted the fire control man in the director, The five inch guns returned to radar control just in time as one of the remaining attackers was making a run at us. But, because of our swift maneuvering, plane number two missed us and ditched into the sea. The same fate was bestowed upon plane number Three.

But this did not daunt the radar' ability and we had a good computer solution on the last plane. Then an amazing thing happened. As I watched the plane's echo on my scopes screen, it appeared as if its rage were increasing. He was turning back and running away from us. Our gunners did not relent however. He was high enough to make it easy to fire effectively.

At that time, we had no way of knowing his real intentions but suddenly his notch disappeared on my screen. I knew that our gunners had made a kill and I reported so to the fire control man above in the director.. I had finally been able to fulfill my duty as a spotter".

My Dad got a Bronze Star for his actions that day.

The most excitement and damage to my boat was been hitting a big rock and breaking my dagger board in half. :D

And for what its worth, I still have the hammock my dad slept in the forward berth of the USS Gregory.

My used boat purchase fell through. The bank used a book value far lower than the selling price. I am wondering why. The other M26 are no lower than "mine", Did I just offer to much for it Just how much boat do you get for 21,500? the bank used that figure and reduced it for age. What about buying a new one. I have contacted two dealers but no reply yet. How about the Hunter powersailboat, is it OK. I'll try another forum for that. The Kelly hanson dealer does not reply to messages left. I am near H&S, but they are no longer a dealer even though they have a boat left. They didn't want to take me out on it.

Jeff,

For $21,500 you get no motor, no headsail, no fuel tanks, no sail covers, no headsail furler. You normally get all that and MUCH more when you buy a "previously owned" boat.

Did your bank realize that? A new Mac, fitted out by a dealer, will probably go for $30K+.

Good Luck,
Jim

I recently picked up a 2001 X in somewhat unloved shape with a 50HP Suzuki 4-stroke for $5,000 - seemed like a good deal - I have has some parts replaced on the motor (fuel rail etc) since its been sitting and after a couple of evenings with spray on cleaner the inside cleaned up like new.
The only thing wrong with it are a couple of small bumps on the rub rail where it took a tiny bit of storm damage, I may yet take it off and put a little sealant here and there before replacing but all in all I am keen to splash it in the nnext week or so. The bottom paint could use a redo but since the boat will be sitting on a boat lift at the end of my yard I may not even bother.
