Come down and take some pics of my boats and see them for yourself. I think you will find it is not too complicated and first hand exposure will get you in the water faster

Hey, that's my picture! Haha. I had the rudder apart this year to sand it down and re-coat it with Spar urethane, and that pivot pin is nothing more than a stainless steel bolt. I can't remember what size it was, though. Anyway, if your rudder is wooden like mine, make sure you sand it and coat it with Spar urethane before you subject it to the water. And whatever you do---though I'm sure it goes without saying here----do not use polyurethane. I used it for one season because I was trying to save money, and had the can laying around, and the label said it was good for outdoors. However, everything above the waterline cracked and peeled; and everything below the waterline turned cloudy and soft.
Rigging the boat should be straight-forward. Did the boat come with the shroud lines? If not, it should be easy to rig them up from scratch. I don't know the measurements for each stay, but you should still have the brackets/eyelets on the decks where the shrouds attach to the boat. And, of course, you'll need a turnbuckle for the forestay. I found this link for Rig Dimensions...I hope it helps:

The beauty of the Venture's is that they are simple, easy to manage, and forgiving under sail. The V21, from what I was always told, is said to be a very lively performer that planes well. You should have a lot of fun with it.
Are you going to name the boat?

Josh,
The rudder pintails are a little more involved to make, which may or may not be a problem for you. If it were me I would first try to go back to the previous owner and see if you can find them. It seams like the PO had taken the rudder apart to make repairs. I think you said he later died. Anyways if you know what your looking for I bet they are still around. If this is not an option you may look at buying them. If that doesn't work then you can make them, and I would be happy to send you some sketches of mine.

I named the boat a while back: It is called "Genom Guds nåd" which is swedish for By God's grace.
That is the only reason I will be out there sailing, by God's Grace
as far as the lines I need to inventory them.
I am going to do some digging around a bit more, maybe I over looked a few things? also I will contact my friend although he has a lot of junk lying around all over the place so I am not sure if he can find anything or not lol.
tomorrow afternoon I head back to richmond where I will start working on the boat and taking all the photo's of everything I have.

I can take close up pictures of anything you want to see. If you get dimensions of the plate from Pete, I can get a picture of what it looks like. I don't think there is any difference in the V-17 rudder and the V-21 rudder, but Pete's dimensions will tell the story.
I like you boat name and your reason.

Ok so GOOD NEWS! I do have the complete rudder set up. For some reason there is two other rudders that came with the boat and I had forgotten that I stowed the venture rudder away in the back of the boat, so I crawled in there tonight and found it. pulled it out and inspected it. I also pulled out the boom and mainsail + Jib. I have pictures of everything that I will post soon.
I have a question about the sails. Do I leave the mainsail wrapped up around the boom or do I take it of and fold it? same with the jib is there any special way to fold it?
The mainsail has wooden stiffeners in it. do I take these out when wrapping or folding the sail up? or do I leave them in?
EDIT**
Ok I rolled up the mainsail kinda loose and put it in one of those hefty stretch trash bags for the time being. I inspected the main sail and found it to be in very good condition and sewn on the sail is the number 2563 on both sides with a V above the numbers. any reason for the number? Upon inspecting the Jib I found a small hole in it and some of the rivets are corroded and broken and one has worn through the leather support through the sail down to the steel braided cable.
I could fix this myself but I am thinking maybe I should have both sails inspected and quoted for repair on the jib? they are the original sails with the boat. how much would you say new sails would go for?

Glad you found your rudder. The things in your mainsail are called battens. You can loosely roll it like you said you did and leave them in, or you can take them out and fold the sail. There's probably a video on youtube of how to fold a sail.
A new jib is probably going to be between $300 - $ 600 , depending on where you get it. Somebody put a link on one of these threads recently for Venture sails that looked pretty reasonable. I would probably patch it if I were you. Get used to the boat and how it sails, then if it's what you want to keep for awhile, order a new sail.
The number on the sail was probably a club number for racing

what exactly should I buy to patch the sail ? I am loading some photo's tonight of the exact damage.
EDIT * I believe I have found some Nylon tape that will work great once I tape it then sew it on both sides.

Ok I uploaded some more photo's and am going to keep an updated album going on.
here is two links to the same album but on different servers, so if one is going slow try the other.
http://www.jjvphotography.com/venture21/
http://jjvphotography.jalbum.net/ventur ... index.html
you will see two random rudders that had confused me at first, then there is the original rudder set up with a few nicks in it that I will be fixing, although they are not bad enough to hinder the functionality.
I also just dropped my sails off with
http://northsails.com/ in Hampton VA. I am having them inspected and estimated for repair. They said they could have them fixed by the end of next week most likely. If it is outrages in cost which I am kinda afraid that it will be, I will just take the time and fix them myself. I can order all the parts I need and so on.
