Tan,
Is the boat share idea that much different from my stated willingness to loan an X boat to Highlander, Capn Paul, Stephen, beene, Shane, frank or others?
Could a discussion be carried on here??

Discuision is fine Darren, we just don't want any offers made on the open forum. Heath is looking at the situation and perhaps will make provisions for the deal making somewhere on the board.

If Heath wants my two cents I would say it is a perfect venue for DESTINATIONS FORUM to advertise boat share, then all arrangments are made by PM or EM
Boat share post would be a one liner with boat and location.

Well,
I understand the concerns about liabilities, but it seems to me that there might be some people interested in doing something like this if there is mutual interest. Personally i feel the same way as the comment about lending a lawnmower - having it returned dirty with no gas - enough to keep me from wanting to do it again, and the anticipation of the same is enough to dissuade me from considering it. So, personally I would have no interest in it. But for people who would be interested, why not provide a starting point for contacting each other to exchange details? This website would make no assurances about certification, qualification, etc.
I don't think this would really fit in one of the current forums, but maybe a new one? Chartering or renting your Mac would not be allowed, just offers to exchange sailing. I will continue to listen to thoughts about this.

Exchanging or sharing boat rides with the owner captain still the captain might be easier to pull off.
I live in a vacation spot in colorado and have a new m in a slip, and would up for that. heading to belleview wa in august, and will be going to florida and texas in the winter. and am interested to learn more about sailing in those areas for possible future cruising on my boat.
any interest in that? there is way to send private messages to each other, but I suspect most of us dont check for messages too often

If you go to your User Control Panel and click on the Board preferences tab, you will see two options for PM's:
Notify me on new private messages: This option will notify you via email, when you receive a PM.
Pop up window on new private message: A small pop up window will notify you of a PM, when you are logged ito the board. Note: Pop ups must be allowed in your browser.

It still seems a natural to me to post, by way of example,
Interested in share on Erie Canal, October 2009. PM for arrangements...
in DESTINATIONS

Ok, thanks KellyHansenEast, will give it a try, but I think not everyone knows about or uses the desitinations section, kind of hard to find at first and easy to forget after that, and probably not everyone is used to using private messages (PMs)

Blue - my post was kindof directed at Heath, the board admin, who has to make a decision about where this activity might reside. Please refrain until he gets back to us with this, since it is his board.
Sorry I wasnt clear.

I dont' see a big problem if people state they are willing to boat share.
Of course, you can do what I do...make friends with others on this board...and then MOOCH rides off them.
Since I am "Macgregor-less" over here in the UK I sailed one weekend trip with RickJ last year and have now gone on three weekend trips with Bastonjock (aka Matt) including a great trip that ended this morning.
Thanks Rick. Thanks Matt.
And any of my Macgregor Sailors buddies that will be in Jacksonville when I am there let me know and I will take you out for a sail.
Cheers,
Jim

I see 'taking folks out for a sail' as being entirely normal and usual behaviour, and I don't believe that is the point of this proposal... but that it is instead to loan one's boat out to another person or persons for either an even exchange of boats (barter), for a fee, or for free.
I would and do happily take folks for rides, without issue. However, I would have strong reservations against loaning my boat to anyone, both for my own protection as well as for the protection of the other person(s) and our relationship. And as I am not insured for same, I would certainly never rent it to anyone.
Shakespeare's Polonius felt similarly, as he gave advice to his son, Laertes, about to depart for Paris:
"Neither a borrower nor a lender be,
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry."
Translated: "Don't borrow and don't lend, since when you lend to a friend, you often lose the friendship as well as the money or thing, and borrowing turns a person into a spendthrift."

Jose.
You are a very generous man. Thanks for all your contributions to the forum. If you would like to have use of my Mac M in the Canadian Rockies, you are welcome to it. As of next year, I expect to be located in the gulf Islands of the Pacific NW. (Victoria, B.C., Canada) You would be welcome to the boat there too.

Kmac quoting Shakespeare certainly vindicates me from the verbose.....

Hi
Maybe a simple way could be a new forum.
Named: Sail together - Crew/Boat switch (it seems boat share as a different meaning than the one I had in mind)
That forum could be "public" for reading.
But: no replies accepted.
This way the author could put is announcement and edit it.
But nobody could answer or discuss it there. (except moderators)
Answers bi PM or email only.
PHPbb can be configured like that.
Its simple, gives no work, or moderation problems...
Rules: "Non profit" activity only. Mac owners only.
Best regards
Jose
PS: Another thing:
The regional forums should be visible to everyone...
Maybe that would increase their use...

I think the regional issues are available, but you may have to sign up through the 'User Control Panel'
