I bought mine new from the dealer. We were at the 2000 boat show and my wife saw the X and exclaimed she liked that boat, but I was looking for a pure sailboat so it did not appeal to me as much. After a year or so I realized that if it was not a boat my wife liked I would not be getting one so I adjusted my attitude. By 2003 we were able to get ourselves into a position to buy but the dealer only had the new 2003 blue hull M so we took that. Did not realize at the time how much the boat would cost me in the end.
Anyway, now is not the best time to sell your boat, you will get more for it if you wait a year or so. You have to advertise in multiple media, not just Craigslist. I have met a few people who had trouble selling because they did not expand their advertising. Get you boat listed everywhere, every internet site and every publishing and make your own posters to put up at marinas or other places. The boats do sell if they are presented in the right places, but I would be hesitant to sell in a downturn economy.

boats sell when the price is right for the area..... In the seattle area now......X's run from 15 to 24 thousand depending on goodies and engine choice.

if you want to sell your boat for the lowest price anywhere,....... you can sell in a few places. craigslist is for budget set. But craigslist can be difficult to keep your listing posted as trolls with nothing better to do to flag listings continuously.

but if want to get more than bottom dollar...as terry says.....advertise widely.

Macs seem to have people willing to drive a 1000 miles to pick them up.

But I have seen a 96 loaded x boat with a 50 nissan, chute, radar, full enclosure, lectrasan head, and more not even get an offer when listed at 17K in the seattle area. times are tough. hard bargains right now.

We bought our 07 M slightly used in the fall of 07 thru BWY in Seattle. The Mac M was about to go back to the bank 6 months after origionally purchased as a fully loaded boat show special with the Blue Waters Yachts Supercruser Package and we had cash as to bargan and get a good deal, we saved over $16,000.00 from the origional sale. We had asked BWY's about used boats and BWY's had not seen the boat used since they origionally sold it and when they went to look at it they sent some cell phone photos while on the boat and we sent a deposit within an hour. I say if you find a great deal JUMP ON IT QUICKLY before someone else does we love our Mac 26M.

I found mine in ebay a year ago, and when I saw it again I offered $10,000 and finally was accepted with payments.

I bought mine after looking at the Macgregor Dealer listed on the MacGregor's Home Page website, I found the BEST nearest dealer ( South Shore Marina, Newitt, NJ)... they had the exact used MAC I was looking for and at the right price + they are the greatest people to deal with (no oversell & very Mac oriented). Thanks Nancy, Steve & Disney (mascot) too.

...........the same way along with the dinghy in Florida, dinghy outboard in San Fran, and the Suburban in Arizona. Too bad for you that more people don't know about this option of searching Craigs List nationwide.

I found mine on ebay. It was from Bill's Boats4Sail, was less than a season old and the seller was only 60 miles away.

I may try the other media. " . Appearantly you can list on Craigslist in regions other your local site. I watched my start in Idaho, then Reno, and it was listed in Seattle when I finally bought it in Idaho.

I found our 2005 on CraigsList. It was in Newport Beach, for sale by a private party. I had also located one on Yacht World, which was slipped in Long Beach, and owned by a broker. My wife and I flew down to LAX to check out the boats. A friend of ours, who is a commercial marine surveyor, drove up from San Diego to help us inspect the boats.

The boat in Long Beach was a bank repossession. The boat was seriously neglected, and needed alot of work before it could even be sailed safely. Our surveyor friend estimated about $6K investment was needed. The broker was asking way too much, about $19K, considering the condition of the boat. To make matters worse, there was no trailer ! Apparently, a mistake was made on the trailer title, which allowed the trailer to be excluded from the repo. The PO still had possession of it, probably with the intent to sell it. The bank and yacht broker were still trying to convince the PO to release the trailer, but the broker advised that I would probably have to buy one. So, add another $2K - $3K to the cost. We told the broker we'd get back with him one way or another, and we drove down to Orange County to check out the second boat.

The in Newport was an entirely different story. This boat, "Lazy Lightning", was in extremely good condition, and had been well cared for. And this boat actually included a trailer The PO was an airline pilot, so as you might imagine, he was a bit anal about keeping the boat clean and in ship-shape. Our surveyor friend found only a few minor issues, like small gelcoat cracks, which I've since fixed. We took her for a sea trial out of Newport Harbor, under power, about a half mile out into the Pacific. By that time, I was sold. When we returned, I made an offer which was about at the NADA value, and was actually about $2K less than asking price. The PO accepted immediately, and we put a deposit down. My wife and I were happy campers! We called the Long Beach yacht broker and gave him the bad news The next weekend, we drove down to LA from San Jose, took possession of "Lazy Lightning", and trailered her back up North.

So, CraigsList actually worked out pretty good for us. We were extra careful, however, to verify the sellers identity and address. And when final payment was made, the seller accompanied us to a bank, to verify that the cashier's check was real. A few extra precautions are in order. I have to admit, though, I was a bit nervous during the 1 week when the seller had our deposit AND the boat. But they were very trustworthy people, and everything worked out just fine.
