A cheap bow thruster system...toss your wench off the bow with a painter and some flippers.

Are you sure about cheap? If I used mine in a cold muddy marina I think I would be paying for a long time...

How about a small plastic mushroom anchor tossed accross the 5 ft. wide pier and pull yourself in during 2-3 ft. following or wind off the beam. I alway take the windward side of dock in these conditions to keep boat slamming into pileings while I go get the trailer or launching. Docking in these conditions have to be right on and you don't get a second chance.
Wind takes the bow to leeward in just 2 seconds and for the person on bow to throw a mushroom plastic accross the pier and hook on the other side pileing and deck as a wedge until you can put reg. dock line on.
I want to keep the first mate on board as I may need her next trip.

At the Southampton boat show I saw a developing design concept. A gin palace - yacht. Gorgeous, a mix of motor yacht luxuries and real boat capabilities. With a the extra windage, they did say it could be a handfull docking it so it comes equiped with pop out thrusters. All very nice.. however these are things that ought to augment skill, not be relied on... bit like gps really
