There seems to be some confusion about my question regarding shaft length. Since I would be bolting a new adjustible mount to my transom similar to Rick Westlake's, I would select a vertical height that would best balance being in the water when in use and out of the water when not in use. A mount with a 14" range of motion would be preferred. So it is not a question of whether or not I can properly reach the water with a short shaft, but rather would the power head be too close to the water line. Has anyone had a problem where their outboard was swamped by a following sea, stopping quickly, or another circumstance where water got through the cowling and either stalled or damaged the motor?
I typically spend about 70% of my time on water in central or eastern Washington lakes and about 30% of my time in the Puget Sound.
Thanks,
Bob

I didn't see the difference in warranty. I agree that the difference isn't that much if you wanted to match the outboards and the extra warranty would be a nice bonus. I'm thinking the weight difference happened in the advertising department though unless the cowl on the Merc is made out of lighter materials or something
.
On the shaft length if you are going to also have it as a backup outboard on the Mac think about can you reach it to put in and out of gear and steer it? If you can reach it adequately then you might be fine. I didn't see the mount, but some of the mounts swing up. If you had one like that then you could swing it up when it isn't going to be used.
Good luck,
