Lost a "boat load" (ha) of sockets once, just 4 feet of water, however 3' of silt and black mud below that in the Patchogue River!
You know what I'm talking about....ooze!!
Retrieved ALL but that 3/8" with a magnet!
Why is it always the 3/8's ??
FWIW, sacrificed no less than 3 cell phones over the years to Neptune, never bothered to try. Also, why do they always bounce 3 times and perform double flips before they hit?? Cheez.....talk about entertainment for Neptune!

Most keys are brass and non-magnetic, or mildly ferrous and lightly magnetic. So put something magnetic (the ring etc?) with your keys if you want to increase your odds of retrieving them that way. Or just use a floating fob.

I was thinking that if you try this you might lose the magnet to a broken off 625lb cast iron keel. If the magnet, with 250lb pull, finds something like that, I don't see it letting go.

You can magnet fish on land too...I've found minimal catches in lakes and found the max in wells......

That is why I think it important to use a line that is not tied off, both ends coming back to you. If it does get a load that is too heavy to lift, kiss the magnet good buy. One could also make a release arm fastened to a second line.

The lake where I go (Elephant Butte Reservoir) is, like all lakes in New Mexico, a man-made reservoir, and there was an old town, Paraje de Fra Cristobal, that got submerged when the dam was built. So there could well be some interesting things down there.

There is a good chance it might work if dried out. My son soaked his iPod and after a week in a bowl of rice is back online. A friend of mine has lost so many cell phones to Neptune, Verizon refuses to offer him the insurance.
I've never dropped my keys in, but bought a few of these for fun.

Ziplock sandwich bags! Don't squeeze the air out, and your phone will float right on top of the water in the bag. Touch screens work right through the plastic, and they cost about 2 cents per each.
