If you dont mind me asking, whats with the head having to be near the door anyway?

If number 2s are in order in our boat, all onboard generally get banished to the cockpit anyway, and having the head as far away from that as possible is a great thing, especially for those worried about sounds they might produce etc...
If its a smell thing, it dont make any difference, as long as you have the forward hatch open, that will sort itself out pretty quick

There was an important list of things we had when we were picking a new boat over our last, and one was that the HEAD MUST NOT BE UNDER A BUNK! Yes, I know there are others on the forum that have no problem with this, but our experience tells us it is utterly horrible if you spend any time in the boat with people who like to visit the toilet a lot during the night

Different strokes for different folks I always say.

In this case, I have read reviews (pro and con). I have come to the conclusion that it all boils down to a persons physical size. I am a medium/large person and am old to the point that I don't bend easily. So the X has a head that has good headroom for those younger folks who are 6 foot or less and a medium girth. Or less.

On the other hand the M has a lower overhead but plenty of girth or width. Don't have to bend too much one way or the other and can (if needed) rig-up a curtain or door to gain more privacy. With the hatch open and on a good day, there is plenty of ventilation to help curtail explosion hazards

Finally.

I like the looks of the X head, but prefer the use of the M's.

The head by the door makes for a taller head, and it opens up the bow of the cabin for more light and more room.

Well to me ... back in 2007 when there were copious numbers of X's in the marketplace to choose from. Each far less than what I paid for my new M at the time, I made my decision to plop down 35K, on a new MAC26M based on my preferences. A large consideration came down to where the head was located and how private and how large it was.

I never used the head on my M as a head - - - although it was equipped as a head with a porta-potty - - - it was a hanging locker for clothes and a storage place.

A coffee can really was used for #1 and since I was usually in my slip at the marina, I used the Marina restrooms for shaving, showering and #2.

I bought a nice new 5 gal. bucket, a new toilet seat, put some rubber bumpers on the bottom of the seat so it fit the bucket nicely. I keep it in the head. When it goes into action, I put it aisle next to the silver post that holds the mast up. I have the companion way open and get a view of the water and field behind my slip. Coffee and newspaper handy. Better than home. So quiet and peaceful.
