You are right, it says "Do Not Lubricate".
Just to see what happens if: Having received two new winches I used the old ones for an experiment. I lubricated one with silicone oil and the other with mineral oil - didn't help at all. Also tried sanding the inner surfaces with fine abrasive paper but couldn't notice any difference. Conclusion: My boat needed new winches

I remember seeing a great article in Good Old Boat magazine about maintaining winches that was really good. May be worth a look.

If the old holes line up
1 Get your new Forespars in the mail
2 Buy two new Lewmars Al winches
3 Install 2
4 Sell 1 on ebay to reduce costs on 2.
5 Be happy
