If I recall, NiCads take the extreme charge/discharge better than NiMH. So for solar apps, NiCads are recommended. For other stuff, NiMH are superior.

I did not make the assumption that it was a NiCad - my original Nicro battery was a NiMH, and I would say that it is more likely than not that the recommended replacement would also be a NiMH (?)
Also note that my original statement was that the price discrepancy was not all of profit origin. I believe that to be the case. There are more factors in play than even the ones mentioned.
The big weakness of anything battery-powered is the battery itself, and its ever-diminshing life cycle, and I don't fault Nicro for this fact. The fan might run for 24 hours when new and fully charged, but that gradually decreases over time. Mine was toast when I got it because it had been sitting in the dark box for so long that the battery had drained to a level beyond recovery.
Wanted to convey that batteries are not all the same in price and construction.
