Thanks Dave, will let you know, I go in and out of Stump Pass all the time and the power when I need it will be nice! I lost my Hunter 33ft Christmas Day to the sandbar north side of the pass, gulf side, drove the rudder thru the stern, total loss! Someone had moved the day marker............

I suggest getting the Piranha Prop, they know the correct one for the Mac as it was my boat that they did trials with, sorta Beta tester for them! I have had their prop since 2002, and wouldn't hesitate to reccomend them to anyone!

I got a Piranha prop this winter and can't wait to try it out. I got 12x9 and 12x11 blades to start with.
Tom, Have you measured the diameter of your prop? With the 12x11 blades the diameter is 11" and with the 12x9 blades it is 11.5"
My original 12.5x8 Michigan prop measures 12.25.

If you told them you have a Macgregor Powersailor, then they "Trim" a bit off the diameter to give a proper bite for Max Speed! I do not have the diameter of mine, but again, they trimmed it up if you told them it was a Mac!

I see that Piranha is coming out with a new prop called the Hydro Bite! I called and they said that it is ONLY available for the Higher Horsepower Powerheads, but they are expanding it to smaller engines soon! They say it gets more torque and speed out of this 4 blade model! I will be buying that one when it is available, for sure!

BTW I have gone 22 MPH indicated ( GPS ) NO BALLAST on this prop! Yes I was light at the time, but even loaded I can go 17-19 MPH depending on conditions!

I didn't tell them I had a Mac. I just ordered the hub and two sets of blades. I'm hoping that i find a pitch-diameter combo that will nudge me over that sweet spot where the RPM and speed rise and fuel efficiency gets better. I like that I can exchange blades until I find the best one for my application.

I'm curious about how it works out.

Tom, I see you've got a DF50. I just e-mailed Piranha to find out if they have either a 3 or 4 blade for my DF60A model, which is not shown on their web site. How many blades is your present prop?
I would also buy a Hydrobite if they have one available, which would make my existing aluminum Suzuki spinner into a perfect backup system.

Yes it is...I can talk props all day long. I've changed mine several times in the marina just to see the differences.

Anything esle I should test before I fill the ballast and raise the sails? I guess I could check the RPM and MPH at WOT with full ballast too?

BOAT – motoring, take two GPS speed readings, the second one on a reciprocal heading to the first, and average the two for a more meaningful reading. Some things that can change your results, so record them if you can- air and water temp, motor tilt/trim position, sea state. You'll already be faster in salt water than us “freshies”.

Accurately mark the line on your daggerboard (while on the trailer) so you can know when it is exactly flush with the bottom (or is that “boattom”) of the hull for least drag while motoring (or running, if under sail later).

Just about any brand new engine (car, bike, boat) will perform differently (meaning more poorly) than when it's had some use on it. Even the newer-technology engines not requiring a “break-in” period.

The E-tec's programme increases the amount of oil injected at first (they'll smoke slightly for the first while, then it stops) to partially compensate for this. I suspect it might initially adjust some other operating parameters too. So you might get more reliable long-term data after the engine has had a few hours on it. But it would be interesting to see your results just the same.
