That's the Island of Lanai in the background.
It occurs to me that in Hawaii they call a balcony (or a patio) a Lanai, so I could say I was sitting on the Lanai photographing Lanai

Everyone else..... nice pictures getting posted. You guys are making my day. Been outside giving "Three Sheets" a good scrubbing today. Then I gave the whole boat the Penetrol treatment. Getting old, I guess..... hands are so sore I can barely type.

OK Steve- so another connection made- another mystery solved.

I've found that the word “lanai” is common in (and somewhat peculiar to) Florida, (among my circle of Florida-associated friends) where it refers to a screened-in area attached to the house, and often with associated greenery and/or pool. No one from Florida that I asked had any idea of what the word origin was (so it has remained a mystery until now) but the Hawaiian island name (and its use as a balcony there) is a strong contender.

Great timing on that photo, BTW.

This was taken at Key West off sunset pier. I know no sailboat in the picture but we were down there for our sailing vacation this year so hopefully it counts.

Glad I could clear that up Brian Yea, I've noticed relatives from Florida use this term. Most of the family is in North Carolina and I can always tell which ones go south for the winter, 'cause they use it too.

Definitely counts....... Sunsets are great When I was in the Navy, I took the Sunrise and Sunset everyday we were at sea (along with about a thousand other pictures.... all lost when an X took them).

This should, likely, be a different topic, but...........
I'm supposed to go up to Mead next Thursday, for a week. I don't think it's going to happen though. All the NPS sites are locked up (National Parks Services). Mead is a National recreation area and is part of the lock down.
Murphy's law comes to mine, since this was going to be only the second time this year I was able to get out on the water.
I'm thinking maybe of going to Havasu, but it is the home of many, many 45 foot 4,000 hp speed boats. Just not sure yet.

Reservoir Baskatong, Quebec, 2013

Great shot Starscream - I've wondered if Baskatong was a good place to sail. I'm just a few hours away and would like to take my kids there perhaps next year,

Baskatong IS a great place to sail with the kids, with a couple of caveats. There are several islands with beautiful beaches and the water can get quite warm in July and August, but avoid June and early July because the deerflies are really bad then. Avoid the construction holidays if you can...we were up there at that time this year and ended up being one 47 boats on one of the islands. Lots of people who simply don't care about the environment and leave beer bottles and garbage all over. Jetskis and pontoon boats everywhere.

You can reserve a place at the dock for a few bucks a day from the folks at Pointe a David. They charge a couple of bucks for a parking pass too, and the launch ramp is free but a bit tough to use: it is just sand and no dock beside the launch. The towbeast better be wearing good shoes and have a 4-low option, and make sure the ballast is out when you haul out.
