That's the lowest price I've ever seen for a D boat

Paid $4000 for "Three Sheets" ( a 1989) several years ago and that was a deal. If it wasn't so far from me, I would buy it.

I'd been wanting a sailboat since I took a highschool sailing class in 1976. I did build a sailing canoe a couple of years later but after being rammed and dismasted by a ski boat on her maiden voyage I sold my canoe for about what I had into her, promising that one day I'd have another sailboat. Time went by and with the hastles of work and raising a family my dreams of having a sailboat stayed simmering on the back burner.

Fastforeward to 2007: While dating the girl of my dreams (my current wife, Debbi) she said that we should go sailing sometime. Thinking of my highschool experience of hiking out over the water of a Laser as it sped along on the verge of a capsize, I agreed whole heartedly. Of couse I didn't realize that she was thinking about sitting on a luxury yacht sipping margaritas in the sun. A couple of weeks later I spotted a Sunfish advertized for $400. We took it to a local lake where Debbi got her fist taste of dinghy sailing. I had a great time. She was not quite as impressed. She had fun but didn't like that it was so "tippy" and didn't want to go very fast. We put about $200 into it over the winter fixing it up.

The next spring we went sailing with some friends, us with our sunfish and them with their Hobie Cats, one of which was for sale. After one ride on the Hobie 18 Debbi couldn't wait to hand over the $1200 he was asking for it. We sailed the Hobie Cat all that year and the following year. We both loved it.

A couple of years later a guy I work with introduced me to a friend of his who aquired a Cal-21 and needed instruction on sailing it. After my first session of working with him I mentioned it to the guy who I bought the Hobie Cat from. His response was "Oh, you like that kind of sailing? I'm 1/4 part owner of a 21 foot Macgregor that you could probably buy cheap." Debbi and I went to look at the boat which ended up being a Venture 2-22. It needed a lot of work but we both saw that it had potential. We sold the Hobie Cat for what we had into her and purchased the Venture for $1000.

We made a list of repairs and improvements that we wanted to do to the Venture. Each time I sailed her I would add to the list. The first priority was to stop the water from comming in. She took on about 6 gallons of water in 10 hours of sailing. Apperaltly one of the previous owners had either ran the boat hard aground or tried to winch up the keel with the lock down bolt installed. The 1/2" hole for the lock down bolt was about a 3 inch slot that had been hidden with a thin plate of aluminum. Once I fixed the hole and we got the boat painted Debbi joined me and we sailed it regularly over the next two years. Each time we went out we would add to the list of upgrades. The boat was awfully small for week long trips to Catalina Island but we loved her. When we had FINALLY finished everythgin on our list Debbi said "After all the work we've done to this boat I don't think I'll ever want to sell it."

Two weeks later I spotted a Macgregor 26D on craigslist for $3500. Debbi wasn't all that interested in looking at it but she came anyway. Once she saw it she couldn't wait to put the V-222 on craig's list. We sold it two weeks later for $3450. So far we're on our 4th page of repairs and upgrades for the 26D. I wonder what will happen when we finish all the work on this one...

I am just starting out on the 'fun' of getting my V21 in the water again after many years in my carport drydock. We live on a bay that is 1/2 time waterfront...tide comes in and goes back out leaving a dry basin! For the first 3 or four years of my stewardship of Simran, she would sit on the silty bottom during those times of low tide. I need to do work on her rusting swing keel and outfit the rigging for single-handed sailing and easier mast raising, not to mention getting a trailer fit to take her traveling. Roller furling for the jib/genoa would be another goal, too.

I'd love to hear what you did during your 2 years of work and hope to gleen ideas for how you made your V21 ready to sail.

I hope you have ideas and pictures to share and maybe can get the new owner to sign on here so we/you can watch as your boat starts her new life.

Here in So. Nevada we say that Reno is close to h**l because you can see Sparks! The only thing better (or worse) than one boat is having two boats. Sort of like Polygamy Good luck with both yatches. Glad you're back on board.

The V21 went into Cal. with a new couple. They called after a couple of weeks after buying her and thanked me.
Chugging away on the V25 now, not as fast as I would like to be going but just glad to be able to do some stuff. A lot of hardware store stuff to remove and replace but almost done with that junk. No backing plates on anything and nothing is bedded..... All electrical was lamp wire. I got rid of that so I don't see" Sparks!"
