And what the heck is a "...Honda 50HP with remote control installed in cockpit. ..."?

From the bow or the top of the mast. Remember Kidman in "Dead Calm"?

Re: Thoughts on this Mac?
I think he's referring to throttle control as the "remote control in cockpit"
Overall, needs some cleaning but could be a good deal.

The Honda 40 and 50 came in two configurations. They referred to them as the "tiller model" and the "remote control" model.SENCMac26x wrote:I think he's referring to throttle control as the "remote control in cockpit"

Re: Thoughts on this Mac?
I appreciate the thoughts...
I can't swing it....I've got so much going on right now with the inlaws moving in...
Builders came by and looks like the addition going to run around $70k
I really would like to upgrade, and have the best of both worlds. No one skis/tubes, but not being the slowest in the bunch when with powerboat friends would be nice. And I also love the room in the cabin.
I'll keep an eye on it...and I never stop hustling, so you truly do never know right Russmt
BUT, still just so love the Vn23 and being the star of the show with this so unique looking boat every where I go....i have drawn small crowds at gas stations before (??)
maybe I should just build the first Vn23 power sailor? (seperate thread??? hmmm)
argh!

Re: Thoughts on this Mac?
Put the new boat on the hard next to the house. Ill come build you a gangplank and we can split the
(70k-2k for boat/2) = 34k
..and you can tell the Admiral you saved almost 34k for the inlaw addition!!

Would rather buy the mac than move in the inlaws...she has stage 4-5 dementia (alzhiemers) and he has mobility issues and is a "big" guy

That's not the original trailer, looks newer with the extra step on the bow ladder and goal post diff.

Re: Thoughts on this Mac?
Yeesh, I have been so busy I forgot all about this thread
I bought the boat for $7500 including the A/C unit
I shuffled sh~t around and cleared out some boats and gear...she's mine paid in full.
I sold the Vn23 to a fellow who will most likely be joining this forum soon.
I'll get some pics up tomorrow.... I really only have one question right now....mounting GPS, seems you all have it on top of the pedestal...however mine has the main sheet control right there...also my throttle for the 50 is on the starboard side near the gas tank, not on the pedestal...is this normal? And where can I relocate main sheet control to free up the pedestal top for electronics...
Been so busy reading the mods section...
cheers
Dave

Re: Thoughts on this Mac?
1996
right? That's my year. If you look at my video's or pics in my posts you'll see my mainsheet goes to a pad eye a few inches below the pedestal top on the forward side.
https://youtu.be/bvZoAF9DISY
The original owner had the sounder/fish finder on the back of the settee so you had to look down into the cabin to see depth and speed. As you can see from my vids it's now on top of the pedestal. It swivels and the knotmeter is quite accurate so I'm getting addicted to having it there. Now I'm on the lookout for a sturdy way to hold a tablet...we just got a 10" samsung with Navionics for android. The GPS in our tablet got its first fix in under 15seconds
I have a lot of mods I wish I had time for

Re: Thoughts on this Mac?
Get one of those grab bars with the sheet attachment on top. That was one of the first things I bought after installing the GPS on the console. With people stumbling around on the water, the GPS will be the first thing that gets grabbed.
People still grab the GPS sometimes but they mostly grab the solid bar.

Re: Thoughts on this Mac?
Yes Ours is a 1996 as well... I got a deal on it and am the 2nd owner....it was bought new for $25k. After his kid grew up, both his wife and kid didn't really enjoy sailing, so he slipped it in a local freshwater lake, and sailed solo. Hence the cabin became a typical catch all for junk. It wasn't horrible, but bad mildew and nothing inside worked electrical wise (which is right up my alley)
I saw briefly in your vid where the mainsheet control is located. I am going to do that today. I have a GPS, was considering getting another kind as I was not sure where to mount. I wanted it on top of pedestal.
I'm also getting rid of the trim gauge as well. 1st thing I did was take out the folding seat. I didn't like it, and I stand up anyway when powering...sailing I can sit to the side or most likely will stand as well. I will save it of course, but for now its out! So since I can visually see the outboard trim position the gauge is worthless (doesn't work well anyway) and will put a voltage gauge in it's place.
I have been debating removing the rolling furler (for now) and replacing with a regular stay. the furler is heavy, and makes setup and launch take longer...we trailer the boat, never slip it. As you know from My VN23 thread I am sitting on a boat-load of gear. I have plenty of sails should find one that fits...we kept the orange/yellow/red jib from the Vn23 sale....it should fit the 26x
So far I have cleaned and gutted it, cushions are fine, need a cleaning for the mildew smell but are in good shape. All the wooden storage covers were junk and I have cut, stained, and varnished new ones...
Today is Wiring day!
Does your 1996 have the motor controls on the side seat as well?

Re: Thoughts on this Mac?
Hi Dave,
My throttle control is on the pedestal but mounted very low. It's the way I got the boat but it's a poor install. It is awkward to get the key that low to start the engine. Reverse is so close to the cockpit sole that it doesn't seem logical. The controls are fully useable but that's as good as it gets.
We are always on the trailer too, I have a little mod I made to support the mast at center while trailering and it really stabilized everything. It's basically 3 2x4s made into a little post with a hole to pin it to the mast step and a cradle to cup the mast.
We have furling and I bought a new Genoa, however if we sailed even a little more I think hank on would be fine or better. This year is unusually windy locally and my heavy cloth genny is working great. However they're forecasting 20-30kts wind all weekend and it would be nice to throw on a smaller jib(yes I can furl and I have the luff pads so I don't lose all performance) but on a typical summer day it would be blowing 5kts if you're lucky then it would be nice to pop on a gennaker like WindChime
The number one reason I would go hank on is stowing the furler while trailering. The PO just let it droop from the mast to the deck between tie points which can distort the luff extrusion. I unbolt it from the mast and lash it as straight as I can along the entire length of the furler. This also means my genoa is constantly rubbing the mast, stays, halyards etc. I have a UV cover but the sail is looking shabby after only a couple years. Then there's mast raising, in short it would be easier with hank on.
Let's see some pics of your neat as a pin wiring

Re: Thoughts on this Mac?
It took awhile to remember the photobucket password...I have had 2 laptops die in the shop (they are always used ones)
Anyway here is the boat

And this is how my throttle is positioned...

I have already removed the mainsheet connection from the top...He had it connected to the end of the boom...I see no reason why I can't move it twd the Bow a foot and then the fwd connection for the mainsheet should work fine....
I'm out here all day wiring...I can post pics as I get things done....going to be a long day
