It's hard to believe the water can get much clearer than sombrero reef was when I was out ... Definitely gonna try for a trip to the exumas within next couple years ... My kids are 10 and 11 so maybe when they are just a tiny bit older and can help more with steering the boat while I put sails up or down etc etc well give it a try ... Id need probably the whole summer off also to wait out weather for crossing and then have to factor in hurricane season ....not exactly sure what you do out in the exumas when a hurricane is coming..... Takes a bit more planning and prep work for a trip to exumas than the reefs around the Keys

It probably isn't much clearer and maybe no clearer but you won't be a number of miles off shore in most cases but can dive in places that are right where you are anchored for the night in more protected water and chances are by yourselves. Just a complete different situation...

Wow. Just . . . WOW!

And then there's Lake Ontario, with the Genesee River's polluted Plume of Shame. Not much point of underwater shots, as they'd look like above water shots aimed down. :P

I have the pleasure of docking in the bay to the SE. Not much better as far as water quality goes, but at least the boat is ready to go all the time. 8)

Is that pollution or more silt run-off from the GV?

The Great Lakes are so much cleaner now than when I grew up in WNY..

I don't actually know, but it's full of runoff from the area, so I'm sure there's lots of nasties in there along with the silt. The Erie Canal also connects to the river, upstream of the three sets of water falls, and you know how pristine that canal water is. Plus the sewage treatment plant midway between Irondequoit Bay and the Genesee River sometimes discharges only partially treated liquid through pipes that run out under the lake for a thousand feet or more, which is hard to miss when it happens. :P

All of which makes me want to haul the boat to some place where you can see more than a few inches under water.

This was taken in Lake Ontario, but at the Toronto Islands. It's the clearest water I've ever had the boat in. It's actually much clearer than it looks, due to the reflection. That's why I took the pic - I could actually see the prop and the bottom of the rudder. And the bottom of the channel. :D

But that doesn't even begin to come close to Sumner's pics. 8)
