We actually did a back and forth last Saturday. We dropped the kids off at my parent's place and left Ottawa at 6pm. Checked into our hotel in Binghamton, NY at around 11:30pm. We were back on the road the following morning at 7 and at the seller's location by 10am.

The boat hadn't moved in about five years. The tires had caved into the driveway asphalt by about four inches. We packaged up what came with the boat, put on some new bearing buddies, the grease in the bearings looked good, so we just added new grease and then we were pretty much good to go.

Getting the trailer out was a little tricky. We had to jack up the trailer and fill the holes with some rocks that happened to be laying around, otherwise, the minivan was unable to pull it out.

The tires rounded out after a few miles, but we were forced to stop at the first gas station to put in some air and take off the port fender. Something heavy must have been put on it because at every bump the tire would rub. We just removed it and were on our way, taking it slow at first.

We stopped about 30 miles after and I took temp readings of the hubs, they were in the 35C range, so all was good.

With a stop or two for food and fuel and customs, we made it home by 10:30 that night.

A half-way beer would have been awesome though!

The SYR route on 81 is faster than coming through MTL and ALB, that is a l...o...n...g trip,for one day.

Kudos to having the guts, tools, and faith to pack up an unknown trailer on a trip like that!

I bet grease in the bearings saved your life on that trip

Well done, it really is a leap of faith to buy a boat so far away and blindly have to trailer it home.

I did the same with my X, not as far it was about 700Km each way, BUT we drove up to get it and back in a day, leaving at 4am and arriving home at just after 10pm.

My main issue was that the PO couldnt tell me what rims or bearings it took, so we packed one of each common size wheels and bearings and some grease and tools.

Yes, it was a pretty long drive which gave the admiral plenty of time to remind me that we should discuss large purchases before doing them...

As if a sane person would think doing this is actually a good idea! In any event, the trip turned out to be fun and we'll laugh about it all in the future, right?

Anyway, I've not made much progress, but here are a few pictures of the beginning of the interior cleaning process. I've only managed to empty out to garbage and start the javex and vinegar mix in the vbirth area.

Doing that with really good ventilation, right?

(Looks really good in the pictures, btw).

Hmmm, we'll that explains a few things! I did dilute it with lots of water, i'm hoping that makes it less toxic for me. And yes, it's a pretty well ventilated area, so should be alright.

Keep those fumes ventilated- you don't want to hasten that thought.....

The reason to mix in vinegar is to give the bleach some extra strength , lowering its pH (if it has weakened over a long storage period for example). If you are then just going to dilute it with water to cut it back, then from the outset you might as well consider going with straight bleach instead, and eliminate the extra risk of chlorine gas being released.

That's really interesting. I had no idea. I thought the vinegar would add a little more oumph or target other types of organisms or something. Perhaps then I will save my vinegar, and use it on my french fries instead!

Yuh must use Apple Cider Vinegar for that....
