Years ago I was stationed on Annette Island in SE Alaska. There was a large bay in front of where we lived. Every once in a while there would be a large minus tide, maybe -18, -20, -22 feet. When that happened the seaweed would gently lay down so that it looked like a putting green. Except, there would be lumps and bumps all over. Those were dungeness crabs. We could just walk out and pick up all we wanted.

Last September, we were anchored in 25 feet of water at the south side of Spencer Spit. Put out two traps at about 6PM, pulled them the next morning, had 27 crabs between the two. Kept the four biggest males...

Before posting this I have spent time trying to figure how to ask this question, but it keeps coming out the same way. So, how do you tell the difference between the sexes when it comes to crabs.

All depends on the species. Here in the PNW, we've got rock and dungeoness - on the underside, males have a narrow abdominal plate, females have a very wide one. Google around, you'll find what you're looking for.

IIRC crabbing at night is illegal in the San Juan Islands.

It's legal if they are placed before sunset and pulled after sunrise.

"No fisher may set, or pull shellfish gear from a vessel, in Catch
Record Card Areas 1-13, from one hour after official sunset to one hour before official sunrise. All shellfish gear must be removed from the
water on closed days."

San Juans are in area 7.

You put them into a big box, and the males are left behind after a day. The females ask for directions and escape.
