Why I am at the forums today is I do need to re calibrate it since installing the mast bearing from BYW. I have the installation instructions, not the calibration instructions.

Now that I see FlyorSail have given up the business, it's going to be hard to reach anyone for a duplicate set of those instructions. I knew this would be the risk for the savings at purchase time. $795 for the flyorsail solution or around $2000 from a known marine vendor.

I installed the rotating mast bearing about 18 months ago and had no issues.

Hey IDH 63 in Georgia, I will try to find the instructions that came with the unit I bought. It might take me awhile to find them - I was so upset with the device I deep sixed it somewhere in the junk piles of my garage. When I find it I will make a scan and try to post it here. If someone here on site can take the electronics box and diagnose it I am willing to pay for your services. It's a small device - a black box about 2 inch by 3 inch with one PC board inside. You need to connect the wires just right to get it to send nmea messages to your chartplotter and I have never been able to get it to send wind direction correctly - it does speed ok but will only send wind data to starboard - it never shows wind to port.

I dunno about that magnetic tape. Do you have to calculate in the declination?

I tied yarn on the shrouds the first time I raised the mast - red yarn on the port and green yarn on the starboard but now the yarn pieces are really short and frayed and the color all washed out so I can't tell by the color if it's the port or starboard yarn. If I used recording tape I guess I could use Janis Joplin for the port shroud and Lynyrd Skynyrd for the Starboard side - that might work but I am more accustomed to using my eyes to tell wind direction, not my ears.

I guess I could go back to my old method and use my finger.

What's 8 track? My recording tape comes on big 10.5 inch reels. Two Sided - (8 Track? Must be very degraded sound to smunch all that onto one tape?)

Ah, reel-to-reel... luxury, that is. All we have is a wire recorder.

I do calculate in the declination, obviously. And I also take my sign (Sagittaius) into the calculation. I don't use 8-track tape because that is what I use in my office.

I have decided to order a SailTimer Wind. I realize earlier product models did not live up to expectations. However, the latest iteration has address many of the technical issues of prior models. I have emailed them periodically over the past 2 years with questions and discussions as to how prior issues were being addressed. STW has always responded promptly. I am going on the assumption if you are willing to put a product in the market for lease you are prepared to make bank on dependability. The STW is 1/4 the cost of the next available system (Raymarine TackTick with mast compass).
Following is the email I receive today in response to the prior email I sent.

It will most likely be 60 days before I get the boat in the water. Once installed I will post the results. My current plan is to integrate with a Samsung Galaxy Tablet running Android, then follow with a Garmin etc. chartplotter which supports NMEA 0183 devices via bluetooth. The only caveat is the data thru put of NMEA 0183 is significantly slower than NMEA 2000. But then I have a slow sailboat so perhaps the data path is adequate for the instrument.

The screenshot below is from there, and indicates that your Garmin can also connect to NMEA 0183 without needing any extra adapter.'

Looking forward to hear after installation.

I am interested to connect the sailtimmer with the AP raimarine ev100 for wind steering an using its display for showing the wind.

But I am somewhat worried with the Bluetooth transmission. Will it work 100% save for wind steering?

Like kurz I too am not convinced bluetooth is good enough for wind steering and why i installed RayMarine rotavecta on the mast crutch to guide the boat on downwind legs (70% of my long passage legs are downwind) but I am still open to a device for the mast top. If sailtimer meets expectations I might consider it as a secondary.

before I made a decision whether to just buy my radar radom with wi-fi only as it is cheaper or go with a combination data cable + wi-fi radom more money $$$ I went on Utube & checked out wi-fi issues , after I seen all the issues people were having with wi-fi radar all makes in stormy conditions with losing the wi-fi connection was so bad that people were posting the wi-fi code password onto their MFD so as they could re-enter it again as fast as poss. not something u wanna b doing in a storm & other wi-fi issues in bad weather , I decided to spend the extra money & go with the data cable +wi-fi radom MFD is hard wired to the radom & can use wi-fi for lap top in the cabin , like everything technology it has it,s up,s & down,s
so wi-fi is good as a back up if u should have data cable issue down the road or for use in cabin for anyone with a wi-fi laptop or cell ph !
