My rotating mast is ALL or nothing. It slams from one side to the other and I don't think it is possible for it to partially rotate.

As for washers? What washers? my teflon (like) washer squeezed out during my first sail. Should I put in a brass washer? I have just been ignoring it.

As for 17MPH under sail it has as much truth as the saying........and I am shooting blanks dear...so son't worry.....

To sail a mac at 17 MPH Roger had to meerly sail it down hill. I would have thought you all would have figured that out by now.

I have three brass washers on top of each other.What model is your boat,they may have done a mod.

no one else of you have stripped the boat, not filled the ballast tank, and gone out and played stupid?? Before I bottom coated ENANDI,

I can't be the only one....

It does sail faster than 10 knts...(and I steered out of it because I got scared before the boat slowed) ..and in my case....it is hard on goosenecks and backstays and I can still see the bend.

basicly no control......broad reach to downwind only....CB almost full retracted, 1 rudder in the water.... reminded me of my Hobie days.... Wish I brought a trap..... needed some rail meat

Imagine a 20 minute long jibe........ and all the fear with that.......you get the idea......lol.

put enough wind, on enough sail.....and you will equivalent to a 30 hp engine....about what it takes to drive an empty unballasted mac at 17 mph..

I for one do not plan on ever doing that 10 kts intentionally to my boat again...
(Unless someone wants to donate an 8 oz storm jib......)

I've pushed mine up to 10.5 mph on the niagara river, yes it was down river and down wind. The difference on the river more than the current is the lack of waves. There is no waves at all and when I got the bow up any little turn of the rudders made for a big change in dirrection of the boat. 18 mph winds, steady with full main and genoa all out. I held this course for a few miles and it sure is a wild ride.

I've run my X @ 10.2 kts. with a reefed 150, no main, and with ballast full on open ocean. The 8-10' waves probably helped a little. I snapped one rudder that I had previously repaired (evidently poor workmanship). The 97 X that was accompanying me broke both rudder brackets. I still don't know why no other boats were out that day.

I do plan this year to try the 150 & spinnaker together, w/ no ballast when the conditions are right on a local lake. Finally found someone as dumb (I mean as adventurous) as I. Need an extra hand. Chasing that illusive 17 mph.

If you are 'under sail'...does this mean that you can't have your
O/B running.
How much drag does a Mac have if you have a full set of sails hanked on
and are also running your 50-90HP O/B at full throttle?

Running the motor full on with the sails up is a recipe for disaster. If the current grabs your rudders or a gust momentarily causes you to turn you now have 20mph of wind from the boat speed to add to whatever wind you are sailing in. Under the right conditions you could be blasted right on your side.

When talking about speed we need to take into account how we measure this speed. It looks to me by reading the above comments that most of you use the GPS to measure it, that means we are talking about SOG (speed over ground). I always talk about speed thru the water measured with a log. The difference between the two is the current. The lake I ususally sale on does not have any current, so for me there is no real difference between my GPS and my log. But if I was sailing at sea with a 4 knots current at the helm and my log is telling me that I am doing 5 knots thru the water, my GPS would say I am doing 9 knots. Also if that current would be against me, my log would still say 5 knots, but the GPS would say 1 knot. Both are important information. The log tells me how I am performing out of a sailing perspective, while the GPS tells me how I am performing out of distance covering perspective. Just had a need to say this, don't know why. I think many people do not see the need for a log anymore since GPS is availlable at such low prices.
But I can live without my GPS, but would find it very difficult to do away with my log.

I sailed in a few races in San Diego Bay for a few years, and NO Doubt the 'D' Model was Rogers fastest boat...by far. Over the years Catalina 22' s,Hunter 260's, and 26's, all were smoked! Don't at all get me wrong, get out and race, it impoves skill and confidence in your boat....just do not look for trophies at the end of the day!

Max speed ever....Two GPS verification was 9.2 Knots Broad Reach 100% Jib, no reef, Ocean swells 2-3 feet, full ballast, current was cooperating! 15-20 knot wind.

Nope, never obtained this in a race, but believe me it gets easier to handle ANY boat, the more you use it!

I do have an electric water pump. (independant 'C' cell battery type) that I will probably end up using, as I singlehand without ballast. Very carefully I might add, keeps ya on your toes, 10 Knot max wind speed, then I douse, fill ballast, and continue on! It is faster, but let me tell ya please use caution! If she broaches, the ONLY way I'll be able to right her is to fill that ballast up.... I do know that!

That's in the manual also, and not foolhardy as it sounds! It just doesn't tell ya how to right her IF she turtles' doing it!
