Been a while since I’ve worked on the boat. Changed jobs, this Corona virus thing, some other life changes.

But I did get out and take a sawzall to the rest of the old trailer so I can haul it off along with some other scrap I have.

Image

We had a good run. That’s the original factory trailer from 2001. I think the PO and I got our money’s worth out of it.

Updates may be slow. Too many house projects need doing and it’s hard to find time for the boat right now.

But your HOA will be happy, and that can't be bad.

Any words I have to say about the HOA probably aren’t allowed on this family forum. :D

But yeah. They’re happy. I’ve been doing a ton of improvements to the outside of the house. Plus remodeling and repainting some on the inside getting ready for a new addition to the family. I’m going to be a father again in September. Apparently. That’s daunting for 46 year old me but it is what it is. At least mom is young enough to keep up with a baby.

Congratulations! Exciting news! My brother and his wife went through a protracted adoption process and wound up with two new kids. Both my brother and his wife would have been close to your age. It has been a blessing to them, and they have never looked back. You've got this.

I believe you managed to get all of the "goody" out of that trailer. Time to say a few words over it and send it on. That still counts as progress though. Take your wins where they come.

I might need a tetanus shot just from looking at that pic... :D

It was a boat weekend. My girlfriend wanted to be able to hit the water today. We didn’t quite make that but we did make a lot of progress. First up I got her registered for this year and put new numbers on. Waxed around them and well, now I have to wax the rest:

Image

And the big update is quite exciting to us. We hung the new motor!

First up was removing the old one. I never did get a lifting eye so we fashioned a harness out of straps and 2x4’s:

Image

We figured if it didn’t work at least we’d be dropping the old motor instead of the new one. Well, amazingly it worked.

Image

Dirty! So we cleaned it up some.

Image

It was an all hands on deck operation to move the new motor into position:

Image

After we got it bolted up time to reconnect the electrical and cables. My GF kicked me off that part. She’s the more mechanically inclined anyway.

Image

And the moment of truth, I let my son crank it:

Will miracles never cease. It runs.

Image

Doesn’t he look pleased?

That’s about it for updates. My GF got all the required USCG safety gear up to date. We’ll find a day very soon and put her in the water.

Next projects - I’m still debating. We need to wash and wax soonish. And I’m chasing a gremlin in the nav lights circuit.

Anyway, it’s been quite a weekend. I’m ready for a beer.

Edit: Also my son washed the Bimini and we put it up. And to heck with the beer. After a shower my old bones said it was a hard liquor night. So I’m sipping one of my “on the boat” favs tonight in anticipation: rum with a splash of coke.

We brought Wind Song to the water today:

Image

Feels good man. Ran the engine and it’s doing fine overall. RPM’s seem a bit high at WOT. Something to work on. For now the boys want to fish.

Nice! I know the kids were glad to get on the water.

Did you find your way down to the wolf Bay Area? A buddy said he saw a Mac go by without a mast. He's building a new place right where Portage Creek meets the west end of Wolf Bay.

Anyhow. Great that you got it wet and the motor ran good!

Interesting. Wasn’t me. We put it at Week’s Bay and are putzing about in Mobile Bay near Pelican Point at the moment.

And added something to my list. The depth finder needs a new power cable. Man it’s shallow here.

We did. And we’re back home safe and sound with no mishaps. Tomorrow I get to teach my son about the cleanup. :D

Taking care of some little things on the boat today. Mounted my Garmin 740s back up and ordered the power cable it needs.

I also ordered a new trim tab anode for the outboard since I broke the old one while hoisting it.

Image

I’m also pondering how I want to repair some damage to the bow:

Image

Knowing it’s a “wear” point from beaching the boat I’m debating how to proceed. Repairing the gel coat seems like it would just rub off again but would probably look the best.

I’m kinda debating just slathering Marine Tex on it, then adding a layer of 4200 or something as a wearable surface.

Not really keen on adding a keel guard to it, but I suppose that’s an option too.

Anyone have any other suggestions? Looks like we’ll have a rainy weekend thanks to Cristobal so I’ll have a few days to think on it.

I’m replacing the snaps on my bimini this morning while I drink my coffee. It’s a small project but needed to be done. I found the snaps I’d bought years ago, so no cash outlay today. Bonus!

Image

I’ve found three different methods to remove the old snaps. First, I just try prying on the center stud with a flat head screwdriver. The really bad ones will bend easily.

If that doesn’t work, I use a pair of needle nose pliers to mangle up the posts and see if I can disassemble.

And finally if that doesn’t work I use the drill to drill the center out being mindful of the fabric which is still in really good shape.

Some of the detritus:

Might work a few other little projects today. I think we’re gonna take her out tomorrow for some fun.

My son and I had a “boat” day today and while it was mostly about fun I did get some minor work done. But first the fun:

Image

That’s my son discovering how much fun it is to just jump off the boat.

Image

That’s me and the dog. She seems to like the boat but not swimming so much. This was her second trip. I figure we can always use her as bait if it doesn’t work out.

A few others are in that imgur album.

On to the notes for the repair log:

I definitely need to reprop to drop my RPM’s at WOT. I was hitting between 5800 and 6000 today.

I put on the mask and snorkel and looked at the keel line while we were in clear water. It needs to be replaced. I might try to do that next boat trip.

Got the VHF working, which thrilled my son to no end.

And finally, motoring is fine and all but I WANT TO SAIL. Need to get the mast and rigging back up to snuff as my next project.
