Re: Sliding Hatch gap (companionway)
Yeah, I often give out advice or present products or solutions for problems that are presented on this site.
The hard part it trying to figure out when I am throwing a fish out there or when I am actually revealing a true solution. I do that because there were many times when I offered up a solution that I really believe in that was not quite the same solution as some one else had offered and they were some what offended by my dogmatic defense of my solution. Because of the lousy conversational style of my writing it can convey that I am telling people that "I am right and You are wrong!" but if you could see my face at the time I write you would see that I am smiling the whole time and also trying out the different solution to see if I should make it my own. I just hate to give up a good thing until it's proven that there is something better.
So I try to be a jokester and present things in a manner as un serious as I can.
In the case of the Thermocell I can tell you it works. It works REALLY GOOD but i did not want to say that - I was hoping someone else would come along and say it so it was not coming from me.
And I am still trying to find 'wharf fat' on the internet but so far no one knows what I am talking about except Bill.

I'm in the process of scraping wharf fat off the bottom of my shoe as we speak...BOAT wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 12:36 pm Yeah, I often give out advice or present products or solutions for problems that are presented on this site.

You are correct. The written forum format can go from a joke to a street fight in one post. Exactly for the reason you state; there is no facial expression, body language, or vocal tone to let you know the other guy is joking. Fortunately, the folks over here are very laid back and don't have much of an issue with it. Although, you did reel me in on the stove thread.
I like the fact that everyone throws out ideas on most every topic. It's messy, and you have to be careful about taking suggestions, but a lot of good ideas come out in the process usually.
Right and wrong are funny things, often dependent on factors that may differ on a case by case basis (talking about solutions to Mac issues - not moral or ethical right and wrong).
I actually value your opinion quite highly - when I can figure out what it is.

Re: Sliding Hatch gap (companionway)
Thanks Jimmy.
I can't guarantee the Thermacell will keep bugs away from 'Wharf Fat' but for normal dining and sleeping they work quite well.
I was unable to find the wharf fat on the internet but I remember an offshore passage in an Oceanside privateer where the skipper made a comment about the "Scrapings of the Waterfront" - maybe that could be the origins of 'wharf fat'?
I documented the event - (yes, I am the one holding the camera):
Captain Chris made some other colorful statements about another boat that was harassing us that day. Eventually we scared them off.
I have not seen that boat around since then.

Re: Sliding Hatch gap (companionway)
I have one of those thermo cell things, and have used it a few times. It was first recommended to me by Richard and Jill, of Jill Kristy fame. Coming from Florida, they know a thing or two about mosquitoes. In reading the fine print, that thing does give off some rather toxic fumes, so I've never turned it on inside the cabin. I have set it up just outside the sliding hatch at night, to add an additional level of discouragement to any mosquitoes which were considering finding cracks in my sliding hatch cover panel.

Re: Sliding Hatch gap (companionway)
Thanks for adding that Mike. BOAT tends to gloss over things where fumes and vapors are concerned.

Well, at least you don't blame it on the dog like Highlander does...

He's never been to a family dinner with my inlaws. No glossing over any of that experience, especially since they actually revel in it.

Looks like a fun outing. I was a bit taken aback by the cannon fire. Cool boats! Is this a local charter in your area?BOAT wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 2:58 pm Thanks Jimmy.

Re: Sliding Hatch gap (companionway)
No, it's educational and historical groups that sail around the world - This one is the Ocean Institute. There are others like the Santa Maria comes here from Europe every two years (I think that one is the National Museum of History or something) There are boats from Cook Islands in Polynesian Vaka boats and sometimes the Hobie Cat factory will bring out the foiling cats and take people for rides and then big offshore race boats down from Long Beach every 4 years (I think) on their way to San Diego and I can hear those guys from my house! For the most part it's just a place for folks to see old or historical things that are parking here as a rest stop on their way south. It's not the real deal like Saint Augustine or something like that - we are usually just a stopover for all these floating museums that stop in on their way south to San Diego because there is no other port for miles before you get there. All these skippers know Oceanside as a sort of rest stop on the way south - we are not a destination (we are too small) but when they are here we get to go on the boats and have fun. The skippers are usually pretty cool to the locals.
In Oceanside we are used to seeing boats from all over passing us by - here is the Great White Fleet way long ago passing the pier:

We were entertaining the people on the Oceanside pier:
