I originally put a 5 hp kicker on my now-sold boat. That was WAY underpowered. I had my outboard dealer put a Garelick heavy duty o/b bracket on, which can take up to a 15 hp or more, but I put a 9.9 hp Merc on it. That EASILY pushed to boat to hull speed even in winds and currents.

Here's a pic of it alongside the 70 Yamaha.

Re: addition of a side boarding ladder is great plan. I totally understand your need. It can be difficult for some of our guests to get aboard the high sides of our boats. (You youngsters wait a few decades! choices. 1. BWY model looks safe and perfect. 2. I’m designing (saw a model on internet recently) a four rope and padded wide-board version to experiment with. 3. The single rope ladders have no space for your feet and toes 4. Rear boarding will work, but have to weave yourself on board

Should be easy to leave in place (similar to a fender) or stow aboard
