Cockpit table with a post?

In my mind when thinking of ideas the boat is a huge Yacht, then when I climb aboard everything seems to shrink.

I think that is a common problem for most guys….

There is a thought that you might consider…. A “bridge table”….sort of like this breakfast in bed tables with the fold out legs except bigger!

It could go from side bench to side bench or fit to the cockpit floor going fore/aft.
It could also be used off the boat on shore for a picnic or 🏖 beach outing.

We always try to make what ever we do make take advantage of multiple opportunities when possible.

My $7 Ikea bed table converted into my cockpit table






I simply installed 1" spring clamps onto one end that snaps onto my pedestal guard front handle then pull down the leg on the front as seen in the pic

It's a nice table and stays folded down when not in use. Some have replaced the plastic table with nice wood.

What size are the BWY tables, and the custom wood fold out tables? They don’t say on the website.

The BWY table is small. I may try and go visit the boat later today and I will take measurements if I do.

The problem is the cockpit on the "M" is small. I think the "X" might be a bit larger.
Therefore if you want people to be able to get around it while deployed, the table must be small.

Doug W replaced the plastic BWY table top with a more functional and beautiful wood table using the same hardware.

From your link Thanks “ The table top dimensions are 18"x22"x1/2" with a 3/4"x1/4" border so the outside dimensions are 18.5"x22.5"x.75". Our first one, the prototype in the background which I had painted Galactica sailing on it, is larger: 22.5"x24.5". That was a bit too big for the cockpit.

Most of the tables appear to be almost as wide as the pedestal and as long as the space available to swing it up.
The Mac26M has less space forward of the pedestal than the Mac26X.
Your pedestal location is somewhat unique due to that really nice custom pedestal.

Some versions of the flip up table use of those flop open side extensions as you’ve seen.
Some have pull outs on the fwd end for cup holders (while some are just holes in the surface for tapered glasses making a simple SST wire “U” shape with pivot wings would allow one to place a soda can or water bottle in the same hole and not have it fall through).


So your demonstrated creative capabilities are free to make something that is uniquely your own!
Having a nice surface in the cockpit for a meal, snacks or a game would really make a nice improvement!
Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Back when I owned an , I made a simple cockpit table system. The table was about 24ish" x 24ish", a single piece of birch plywood, radius corners, edge trimmed and about 5 coats of varnish.

Using white cutting board material, I fashioned a bracket that mounted to the front of the helm pedestal. A corresponding metal channel bracket was mounted under the table slab so the two brackets sandwiched together and two thru bolts with wingnuts secured the table to the helm.

At the forward end of the table I used a freestanding adjustable shower curtain rod to support the table. The whole setup was very easy to setup, take down and to store. The adjustable shower curtain rod had double duty in other parts of the boat to hold stored items in place while underway.

If replicated, I'd use Starboard or PVC board instead of cutting board material, which eventually became too brittle after many years exposed to the sun. Hope this bit gives someone some ideas.

Thanks guys for your input! I think I’m going to keep the table fairly simple. Making it attach to pedestal, and have a leg or post. 1/2” Plywood (bamboo) 10”? X 18”? Long, with folding leafs to make it 20” wide x 18” long. And make a second attachable table to end of first table to double size, with another leg or post (if there is enough room). Both would need to be stored somewhere.

Similar thoughts on the ‘where to store it’ aspect!
It’s amazing how our spacious boat gets filled up with stuff!
I’ve been eyeing a couple places that a table might be tucked away….yet remain readily accessible
One place is the vertical side spaces in the aft berth (effectively behind the fuel lock cubbies.
A shelf of sorts bridging from the underside of that cubby over to the wall…..
….up out of the way and we haven’t found a good use for the space otherwise as yet.

If I made my rear deck gas tank idea, then I could use the gas tank space to store the table(s).

Yes, I recall your aft footwell center tank concept!
Yes, that could be an excellent place for a large fuel tank to replace (or in addition to) the existing fuel cubby tanks.

Depending on how you fabricate it that single tank could hold around 24 gallons of fuel (which would replace our two 12 gallon tanks) and have the advantage of being centrally located for pretty much a neutral side to side balance though I’m not sure of how it might affect the fwd/aft balance (probably not by much).

Leveling off that aft pocket wouldn’t be bad either!
In bad weather with a following sea (not that we’re going the be out and about on purpose ) a slip in ‘splash panel’ behind the center seat would suffice and probably do better anyway. While we currently place our companionway panel there in good weather to keep it out of the way instead of in the cabin there is no reason two panels couldn’t fit there.

Gaining two external lazerets would be a nice perk.

That springs up another idea though….
“If” one was to have a ‘splash panel’ behind the center seat it could also potentially double as the cockpit table in calmer circumstances if the dimensions worked. (The splash panel could be in two pieces that slide in on over the other. Hmmmmm…..…..this deserves further thought on both the center tank & table/splash panel for the future mod file…………
