Dropped my CB for the first time. I put a camping mat down and let my CB line out about 4 inches. After that i tapped the CB hanger screw thru the hull and it gently landed. CB is in excellent shape w original gelcoat. The line was severely frayed and cut when my razor just touched it. The hanger had some corrosion I suspect from the PO however I suspect it had at least the CB pivot pin replaced - looks like electrolysis afaik. Pics of CB hanger corrosion to follow. Its an 02 and i suspect was in saltwater til 09-10.
Note I had no issues with it but had never given it an indepth inspection. I dont think the hanger is near structural failure but I have one to replace it and will along w the pin.

There was an older thread (which I could no longer find) about putting a tight ball-bearing ring around the centerboard's axle, which will allow up-and-down movement freely, but not so much laterally so it wouldn't bang against the walls of the boot. I'd been considering it in the past, but never got around it.
I did try inserting some "cushions" in the boot itself, but had problems with the centerboard going down freely and easily, so I removed them--and learned to live with the consequences. But a better solution would be totally welcome!

My CB is in good shape and has the original gelcoat. The rest of my hull that touches water has rustoleum copper antifouling. Is there a strong reason for or against putting antifouling on the CB (I guess it made this far without)?

I haven't replaced mine yet, but when I do this spring it will be with Dynema as well. Knots don't hold well in this slippery line, and, as mentioned, it doesn't cleat well either! I use Amsteel Blue (https://duckworks.com/amsteel-blue-12-s ... ctra-line/) for a lot of rigging, and I REALLY enjoy it.

The key is learning the Locked Brummel eye splice ( Once that simple splice is in your toolbox, the world is your oyster! There are variations, including "one end fixed" or when you can't pull through the other end of the line (

Thus I would splice the line directly to the centerboard, pull it through to topside, and then form another splice with a thimble. To this I would tie a length of non-stretch line (https://duckworks.com/marlow-excel-racing-line/) which will the hold really well in your cleat.
