I agree with catigale about the charts and hand held, that we dont really need all the big stuff where we end up taking our boats....buttttttt I like the toys. And the garmin /lowrance thing has been debated before. But its 6 of one half dozen the other as far as I concerned. But the nautic path software put the lowrance/eagle over the top for me at the time I bought.
I can buy this Garmin GPSMAP 168 sounder.
http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap168s/
for $235. It is a new in the box discontinued item.
I already have the bluechart cd, unlocked for my area.
Do you think this is worth it, or should I pass?

trapeze,
I believe that a combined plotter/sounder is the best choice for our little boats ... single display. Obviously a sounder adds special value for Florida's shallow waters. I've had a Lowrance plotter/sounder ever since I bought the boat, $700 with charts and I've really appreciated having it aboard. It's modern replacement unit has lots more features, but also will be the same price, $700 with newer charts.
As for buying the older unit - why not! Garmin's not my first choice but it would be if I already had the charts! I looked on eBay. You might save a little from that $285 if you want to hassle it, but prolly no more than 50 bucks. It's only a third the price of a current Garmin, and less than half the price of the Lowrance that I've targeted. I'd say that Garmin 168 is a good choice!
Now ya got me thinking I should browse eBay myself for some "classic" Lowrance gear.

I do like the new combination units that can get the XM weather on the GPS, however I am going to get the handheld Garmin 76CS. When the AIS http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/enav/ais/default.htm (Auto ID system) is intergrated into the fixed mounted units, I will get one then and use the handheld as a backup or for dingy.
When? - nobody is saying maby in 2 to 3 years. Whould be nice to know where those BIG ships are headed without having to have my laptop on deck or pay $ 3500!!!
