I have actually run the AC, dockside, on my boat and I get NO noticable vibration. There is, of course, some noise. But, I rather like the relatively constant hum that masks the drunks down the dock...

I have yet to run the Generator onboard. I might this weekend, just for the heck of it...

Yet another AC solution for the Mac

Scott....the Honda runs very smooth and is on rubber feet...for our application, we added a transom panel and piped the exhaust out and a hang it a few inches into water....surprising volume of bubbles and burbles...but not offensive and apparently not significant valve backpressure. My related mod was posted last summer. I agree that 'vibrations' are minimal. BTW, we use a CO alarm in the salon. Depending on where you boat....most folks would use shore power at a marina or in the driveway, and reserve the Honda for overnighters. 8) Jack

Dang it! :x and I liked the Doggie A/.C thing . . . . not too many boat bucks could sit on the fore deck pump down thru the fore hatch would fit in my dock box and take up no room in the boat ... The ONLY draw back is it won't do the job :(
OK then back to the drawing board,as I am not sold on the companionway hatch Mod . I guess I need to bite the bullet and retire so I have time to finish several Mods I have been working on .. So what will it take to cut up a 5000 to 8000 BTU window unit and do the same thing as the doggie a/c ?? I think a Trip to . Uncle Tahoe Jacks Garage Studio is in order ...

My thought is: very little. I'm looking at doing the same thing. In fact I went to buy the A/C two days ago. However, due to the heat wave in our area there isn't an A/C less than 9,000 BTU to be had anywhere. As soon as they're back in stock I'll get one and start the work.

I snagged a 5000 BTU unit from Lowes end of last summer for $38....bought one for the cottage, one for Mom, and another for home office so we dont use main AC all the time when Im the only one home..

Might be a good mod to wait for End of Season, Chip...

>> For those that have actually run a generator and/ or A/C on their boat not just theorized, how much noise transfer do you get into the cabin.<<

The little Hondas can be cast overboard into the dingy. That isolates all the vibes.

The reviews on the koolaire were pretty bad. The one guy that liked it and said it worked great camped in Alaska during the winter. So its not a very good deal. Too bad it looks as if it would work but I bet you go through Ice pretty fast.

The unit for sale on eBay did not get high reviews from owners. I would opt for one of the self evaporating models.

Review from Amazon - "I bought this AC unit during the excess heat wave this summer. The unit, (once properly vented) works really well for cooling my bed room but it shuts off when the water needs drained. Durning these hot temperatures this is after only 2-2.5 hrs. Draining the water is not an easy task because the drain is only 1 inch from the floor so you can only use a really really shallow dish. It does come with a hose to connect to a drain for continous drainage but the drain must be below or at the same level as the AC unit.

This drainage problem makes the unit NOT useful for long term cooling (you can't run it all night or use it to cool while at work)

As a long term solution I am working on buidling a stand to set the unit on for continous drainage into a bucket but it is heavey and vibration makes noise a problem. Other portable AC unit have a collecting bottle which is easy to revome for drainage. "
