One of the things to think about is if you use lead shot and epoxy, the epoxy can fill the spaces that the lead shot can not. So the point that epoxy weighs less would be counteracted by the epoxy filling the voids. That is unless you are using a very tiny shot size. Just a thought. Have fun, Tony

Weighting the CB

I weighted my CB with melted wheel weights, but have never weighed it since. I filled past the first hole at the end, drilled another hole and kept filling. I also widened the board at the head so there is very little head spacing and no noise when anchored. Lifting a heavier board was made easier with a 3:1 uphaul anchored in front of the starboard winch and to the left.

The results are noticable as to performance. I have been the first X across the finish line at the Founder's Day race at Lake Mead for 3 years straight, not having raced this year. However, I also invented or copied the CB gasket used on the Flying Scot boat . After 3 years of use I just removed the gasket and have a new speed mod in the works.

Just an observation: heavier boards will eat uphaul lines that encounter any chaffing in operation.

Newell,

1st: Have any guesstimate on the relative benefits of the board weight versus the slot gasket?

2nd: Any good-natured protests that your boat isn't "box stock?"

CB Mods

Frank and all,

First I did the board and then the gasket but the racing on Mead was with both mods and I can't give a value. I'm removing the gasket and will be going to Mead next week, though we don't organize a race, we actually race every day all day. Perhaps I will note a difference in performance. My feeling about the mods boils down to a improvement in light winds when using no ballast. Heavy wind all bets are off. I also never fared very well when racing close to the wind in SD with the VYC ask Murv or Hart about that.

As to your second question racing at Mead is for fun, no rules no handicaps, though I did have one fellow swim under the boat to see why I was doing so well.

I have been considering this mod as well. The performance enhancements that Newell and the 'Black Pearl' Mac 26M has, seems to be key to better performance.

Hey Newell, ya spanked my aft, in the SD races many times my friend! :P

Now, if we could only mod the board to be an anchor as well, that would be something to really talk about!

Just kidding of course! 8)

Heavier CB

Tom,

Perhaps I could put those water wings of Maddmike's on my board attach the rode to the uphaul, put a quick release on the CB hanger and yes you have named it. The first CB/anchor combo! Let's go into business.

I might also mention that I ground down the lower leading edge of the board and glassed in wheel weights. Sailing on thin waters as I do, I am getting very little damage to the board on the occasional bottom scrape.
