Jetta / Aya etc, this is beginning to sound more & more interesting. I routinely motor to the Malibu Pier most of the time when I go out of MDR, takes one hour and then the wind comes up (11 am) and we either cruise back along the $15 million buck homes or go way out on a starboard reach, so we can later wing & wing back into MDR.

Since we didn't have our November Get-Together BBQ this year, maybe we can fit in a Paradise Cove December Rendezvous?

How about December 23-24? Or New Year's weekend?

never went all the way there, can you anchor in paradise cove over night?
is it calm there?

Maybe you could anchor over night but looking at my chart I would say it's not very prudent as that offers very little protection from west and south swell.

Has anyone done it? Anchored at Paradise Cove?

Zuma claims to have done it.... However we haven't heard much back from Zuma now that people are actually interested.

Paradise Cove, on the lee side of Point Dume, is a great anchorage under almost all winds conditions. A south swell will roll throught there, but winds are generally diminished. A nice restaurant at the little pier is easy to get to with a zodiac, or even a kayak, unless a south surf is way up.

Sorry guys. Law school finals and then travel have made me a bit scqarce in these parts..

Anchoring at Paradise Cove is not hard at all. There is a sandy bottom at about 30 feet.

If you look at a map, you will see Point Dume to the west, a C-shaped beach, and then a small secondary point another 1/3 mile to the NE. This smaller point is called Little Dume, and if you've ever been to the "Above California" ride at Disney's California Adventure, you've ridden above Little Dume. Paradise Cove is just to the left (east) of the parachute riders' view of the surfers.

An undersea rocky rodge lies due east of Little Dume, about 1/4 mile off the coast. This is the BKR ("Big Kelp Ridge), a famous old fishing spot. The 3/4-day fishing boat MV Scorpio from Malibu Pier is found hovering over the BKR most mornings.

It's my opinion - nothing scientific but I've spent a lot of time there - that a lot of the southern wave energy is attenuated by the BKR.

Winds at Malibu - except Santa Anas, a whole 'nother creature; or when a front blows through - are ALWAYS strongest from the WNW and between 1300-1600. Paradise Cove makes a perfect lee. It can be really nasty around the point at Zuma, and nice to the lee.

It's very rare for winds to come from the SE, S or SW. When they do, it's a part of a wet and windy winter storm system that you don't want to mess with anyway.

Several big-ass yachts anchor at PC regularly, and lots of guys anchor their motorized mosquitos (PWC) there in the summer. Some neighbor boys buy a salvage sailboat every summer, anchor them at PC while they fix them up, and then sail them to Anacapa... regular sandcrabs, those kids. The first summer they ran aground at the Point Mugu navy base and got arrested.

Paradise Cove back in the 1960s had dozens of boats anchoring in it. Sadly, recreational boating is too expensive for the average joe (unless they have a Mac!).

Bottom line: lemme know when the raft up is.

I havent been out. My various crews seem to like the fair weather sailing best and I find it hard to get people to go out in the nasty stuff.

But two weeks I have a sail planed on Sat. so maybe Ill shoot over to Malibu and check out zuma's info.

Day dreaming about all the mods one can do to a 30 foot telstar, If they ever make one. you know 90 hp motor things like that. Not going over to the dark side yet, but if I were to retire and wanted a full time boat life I think the Ideal boat would be a trailer-able telstar in the 30-35 foot range.
The mac spoiled me as far as performance and portability.

anyway back to Malibu, going ashore in the dink in PC, can you tie up to a pier? or do you have to beach it?

I'll doublecheck with my buddies at the cove management, but no motorized vessels are allowed to beach anywhere in the City of Malibu. Asinine but true: blame the SOBs on their PWCs.

Plus, the private beach at Paradise Cove is also posted "no PWCs". Not sure if they would look the other way at a dinghy with a putt putt. Since the beach is open for swimming, I think motorized vessels are verboten on the sand.

That said, most days the waves are pretty slight and a wet landing is not all that awful.

Monday, Jan. 8 afternoon: Sunny, hot, high near 85. Winds strong out of the north at 25 gusting to 40. Small craft warnings. Swell: flat near the coast.

Evening: Clear, hotter, overnight lows near 85. Occasional sparks, and burning houses on piers. Winds 40 gusting to 72. Hurricane-force winds possible below mountain canyons. Blowing sand near the coast, no swell.

Alert to mariners: several Baywatch and fireboats working the Corral Beach area.

I swear to Neptune those were the actual conditions!

Mike, tomorrow (Sat 1-20) I'm attending the funeral for the charter jet pilot that crashed at Van Nuys Airport last week. I had just about convinced him to go sailing too . . . .

Next weekend's long range forecast is for mid 70s! How about Saturday the 27th as a recon trip?
