Dreamer. I am not sure how new to sailing you are, but most Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons are starting their boating courses this month.
They instruct and test for the Pleasure Boaters Card as well as teaching navigation and pilotage as well as your VHF Operators certificate.
You can check for a local squadron at:

Dreamer , listen to what Bill at Boats4Sail says. He is one of the most useful Mac dealers in the USA IMO. He knows his stuff and will help you all he can, befor and after the sale. You can trust him to steer you in the right direction.

What you will also find when you dig a bit deeper, is that the price you saw at the T.O. boat show was not including $3000 shipping and every option from the factory is way out of alignment with the US factory pricing, let alone Bill’s discounted prices. By the time you have a nicely equipped boat, you are $10,000 ahead by buying from Bill vs DS in Canada.
1. no duty
2. pay no tax to Bill
3. pay pst gst at border based on bill of sale
4. have trailer inspected by Canadian Tire $0 dollars
5. register boat with TC at Service Canada Location $0 again
6. take all paperwork to car license outlet, get plate for trailer, standard plate fee
7. RIV sends you a decal to put on the trailer, $0 again
8. enjoy your new boat and feel good that you just saved enough to buy an OB for free!!!!
Any questions? PM me and I will be happy to help.

Beene,
When I brought my boat accross the border, Canadian Border Services
Agency charged a $209.00 fee for the ROV form 1. Form 2 is sent in the mail to your home address and all being well gets there in a week or so (mine took 3 weeks as the Agency head office couldn't read the Border Agent's writing and waited until I called them before getting it in the mail).
Once you get from 2, you bring the boat to Canadian Tire for the inspection of the trailer.
Granted, the extra $209.00 is not a lot, but I really wonder why such a high cost for 10 minutes work.
I bought my 1998 26X, paid all taxes, and including travel expenses was just over $15,000 Canadian. I see Dowsar recently sold a 1998 model for $28,900 only difference is I have a 18HP instead of a 50Hp. Supposing a $4,000 difference price of motors, I still saved about $10,000.

Yesterday, I had a customer from Alaska pick up his new 26M with his motorhome. He was on his way to southern California. Wisconsin was right on his way, sort of.
That would have been a long train indeed, about 60 feet long perhaps. Hope he did not go through Chicago. Like to see him get through that construction steering 60' of length.

I know what you mean Mr Beene. I had to go through Chicago when I left Bills place. Took me ages. Must have been a 5 mile back up of traffic. Then they have the ba&%s to take the toll fee. How many toll roads do they need around Chicago anyway. Must be at least 5 and they all have the road diggers working on them. Vehicles were having to cross lanes to pay the toll. What a mess

Right, forgot about that RIV charge, mine was 179 I believe. I called RIV after 2 weeks, got them to email me the form using pdf format. Printed it off and took it to CT, the rest you know.
Happy with your X? I love mine, just trying to hang in there till spring.... not easy to do

dreamer, have you found your engine?
I found canadian dealears offer ~10% better deals than the best I found in the US. In you are from Ontario, I might reffer you a dealer. This might even save you the shiping fees. For the boats, the best prices seems to be in US from Bill at BOATS 4 SAIL. I've tried to buy used ones, but could not really save money buying a used 26M. Peoples are way too attached to them

Well, I went to the T.O. boatshow again on Friday night. A lot less people and without the wife and kids so I was able to take my time and speak to alot of people. Of course I picked up every brochure dealing with sailboats, sailing lessons and outboard motors. I'm going to be enrolling in a basic level keelboat cruising course in April. (27hrs total).
In the meantime, I will continue looking at this sight and hopefully purchase a 26M in the next few months. Thanks for all your suggestions keep them coming.
Calin,
I have noticed that outboards seem to be priced reasonably in Canada Any dealer recommendations would be great. I'm about an hour NW of Toronto.
Also I am going to start a thread on where people go and do trailer-sailing in Ontario. My wife still needs some convincing that this would be the ideal boat.
