No prob.... I was looking for the Alcup anyway. Honestly, I have skulked around here for awhile but decided being anti-social was not very nice.

Not sure if you were referring to me, but thanks. And it looks like you may have it sold.

It sounds like people get mixed results with props on the Honda 50. I had problems with the Michigan 4 blade prop. Others have had problems with the Solas Amita. Others say the Solas Allcup is the way to go.

Maybe we need a thread for Honda 50 HP motors that lists key info, as below. It would be nice to have a separate thread for each motor/HP combination. It gets too confusing when different motors are in the same thread. This should be a "permanent" thread so it doesn't get buried over time.

Who thinks this would be helpful?
If Mac community thinks this is useful, who knows how to set it up?

An Outboard/Prop database has been discussed among Heath & the Moderators.
Trying to capture it in discussion threads is undoubtedly an exercise in futility. After defining a data-set for motor/prop/performance (expanding on your example above), it needs burning into the Member Profile, or perhaps into a subsidiary Forum section ... the MacMods section as an analogy. Once that's done, one could search and sort the database to find boats with same prop, same motor, etc.
It has at least been discussed & considered, but resources are limited.

Me! :)
But I think all that info is out in the archives somewhere and only requires compiling.

It is probably easier to compile if the people who originally generated the info send it to the "compiler" rather than the compiler trying to search through the archives.

Maybe a combination of both searching and sending the info again.

Funny too ... I live near SF Bay, but Mom lives in Edgewater MD. One of her favorite restaurants is Pirate's Cove, so I get to eat well and watch the West River at least a half-dozen times each year. In the eight years I've owned my 26X, I've never been able to show her one like it ... even though I know there are lots of 'em in that area.

I'm sure the Chesapeake wd be a terrific cruising ground, but I just haven't convinced myself to move the boat away from our wind tunnel! :D

Sorry, it was a post on an open forum. I should have said "if anyone is interested".

I agree with you about the mixed results...with the 50HP not being enough to get the boat "out of the hole", the weight in the boat and how it was distributed seemed to have the biggest impact on how the props I tested performed. Just by changing the weight around, I could get anything from good to poor results, with at least two different props. I still wonder whether or not if my motor was mounted a little lower, this sensitivity to weight might not be as pronounced.

Frank,

I keep my boat on the Rhode River (Holiday Hill Marina) which you may know. There is only one other Mac (an M) there that I have seen. However, at Casa Rio Marina which is a half mile away there are plenty of X'es and M's and that is where the local Mac dealer commissions his boats.

If you like, let me know when you will be over this side again.

Thanks for the reply. How hard would it be to add a category to the Mac Mods Page called "Motor/Prop" Then people could post your table (filled in), along with any other relevent info.

The Title would be the Boat/Motor Brand/HP:
for example: 26X/Honda/50 HP
 ! Frank C:
A new MacMods sub-section (Performance Reports?) is probably quicker than trying to create a totally new table for outboards & props. It might not offer complete search & sort, but it would be much easier to scan for performance-by-motor ... than using discussion threads. Then too, how important is it to search on a particular Prop?? .... not very, methinks.

This is Heath's call. He is working on a number of upgrades to the Forum, but he's also extremely busy right now, including some family health issues. I'd suggest that we all 'drop the hook 'n pop a brew.'

Cannot promise what or when, but hopefully some changes on the way for later this year. Meanwhile, please notice that there's not too much advertising here.
Don't forget, there's a Website Support button in the left margin of every page ...

My two 9 pitch Props

Posted: Sat Jun 16, 2007 3:16 pm
by Erik Hardtle
I searched around the board for the best props and decided on the 9 pitch, so I purchased the Solas and Vortex.

I just recieved my two 4 blade 9 pitch props for my Honda 50 hp 4-Stroke. I used to use a 13 and 11 pitch (9 - 11 kts @ 5800 rpm) . So here are my results.... keep in mind I have a 138 lb centerboard mod, 2 gel batteries, an engel refigerator and two 9 gal gas tanks. I left the ballast tank empty:

Vortex 4 blade: 12 x 9
5000-5500 rpm - 13-14 kts

Solas Amita 4 11.8 x 9
5900-6000 rpm - 15-16 kts
part # 3313-118-09

Ok so the Solas rocks and I will keep the vortex for a spare. I didn't have any cavitation, probably because of the extra weight on my boat.

Added: I got the props from iboats.com

On cruising I just leave my motor tipped down so the blue hulls can keep up....

This is not for the Amita that they are referring to, but I recently bought the Solas Alcup 11.8" X 9 pitch 4 blade from a1discountprop which they sell for $77.25 with insert. They were out of the hub inserts for the Honda at the time, but the prop without any insert was only $50. I got the insert from Soderblooms for under $20. It takes a Yamaha insert, YC-KT. They still list them on their page, look under the header "ALCUP C4 - Aluminum Propeller Interchangeable Hub System". The best price I found on the Amita was about $95.

Ivan,

Please give us a report on the performance with the new prop.
