Carbs

Post by Timm Miller »

Mine did the same thing one year.......high speed circuits were clogged. Tried Seafoam.........I like this stuff but it wouldn't clear them. I do use it to pickle my carbs in the Fall for layup. Go to Walmart and look for Berrymans ChemTool B-12........I have two 12 Gal. tanks. I bought two cans and put them both in one tank........ran it hard.....cycling through high and low circuits until the tank was emptied.................no more problems....runs great. You may have to do this more than once......double dose.........but they will clear. I would try this before you yank the carbs........it worked for me, might work for you.

I am thinking it is gum in the "cross-hairs" that my dealer says exist in the jet.
Great idea just above from TM, but before you even try his idea ...
your symptoms could easily be an air leak in the fuel delivery system. When the motor reaches 3000 rpms the fuel pump has to suck harder to provide enough gas. If that extra suction pulls air instead of fuel, the motor will starve. Fuel delivery systems simply 'wear out' after about 3 years.

How old are your fuel tanks and fuel hoses? The QR fittings can leak air at either end (tank or engine), either male or female parts, so there are 4 potentials. And of course, the primer bulb can leak. In my case, the plastic fuel pickup tubes (inside my Duratanks) had both split where they were pushed over the hose barb, so changing to a new hose and new QRs didn't solve my problem. Search on the word starvation.

A heavy-duty treatment with B-12 is advisable too, but the treatment will work better if the fuel hoses are working right up to WOT. Further, chemicals like B-12 might recondition rubber parts just enough, temporarily, to mask the real source of your problem.

Excellent points Frank.......These are things that should be checked out also.

I have a Honda 50hp, I use stabalizer in the fuel tank and have not had the problems mentioned. Based on everything I read in boating magazines this seems like a necessary precautionary action.

I also change the fuel filter regularly (each year). Since, that could clogged as well as the carbs.
