WRONG! Details
here. DFI two-strokes such as the Evinrude ETEC and FICHT, Mercury Optimax, Tohatsu TLDI, and Yamaha HPDI are all legal. IIRC some of the EFI two-strokes also met the EPA 2006 standard. Only carbureted two-strokes are specifically banned, such as the small horsepower models used on small sailboats and fishing boats.

The Lake Tahoe environmental patrol boat (or equivalent) uses an E-tec outboaard to patrol the lake for the banned 2 smokers and claims a 98% reduction of pollution since the 2 stroke ban was initiated. This info was provided by an E-tec DVD which interviewed the patrol man.
Anyone thinking of repowering or a new M should get the DVD--some interesting E-tec and 4 stroke comparisons.

Every engineer and mechanic I talked to while I studied up to choose my outboard agreed that 2-stroke is superior. It isn't just the extra 100+ moving parts in a 4-strokes head, they all said for the weight and fuel consumption a 2-stroke produces more torque. I wont pretend to fully understand the difference myself, but I queried more than twenty experts in propulsion to make my choice. Although most were rocket engineers, because those are the folks I know, they are still experts in engines. What finally cemented my choice was that the other companies didn't refute Evinrudes claims, even the vendors in my area were mute on the subject. When I ask direct questions and get obfuscatory replies I know the salesman is feeding me a line. Another selling factor is the generator in my Evinrude is powerful, I like a well charged battery, better for mixing margueritas.

David,
Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. I agree with your post 100%, and that's why I chose an E-TEC Evinrude for the

I just ordered. I have owned several over the past 50 yrs, and currenttly have a 1976 55hp Evinrude. It runs as good as it did 31 yrs ago, when I bought it.

I like that new Honda, but I am inclined to go for the new Merc 115 4 stroke. Same weight as the 75/90. For me, it's 4s or bust!

You guys who still like those heavy 4 stroke monsters should really look with an open mind at Alex's video 7 posts above. See all the different videos. E-Tecs are the greatest. I LOVE my 60 on my Mac.
