An update on the Cannon project

I have figured out how I am going to do it

http://youtu.be/DIvbCXlIqmY

However I will make mine look real, and also be the diameter I need to shoot the mortar balls I can get from SC as well

But Carbide and water are not illegal here....another site suggested using small "pouches" of flour to create "smoke"

This will be awesome, and when wildlife officers see/hear me firing it off I'm 100% legal as long as I don't have any of the mortar balls on me  and am just firing the carbide/water mix

Oh I can't wait to start on this

I know right! Apparently it is the rush of Vacuum down the tube from the Acetylene expanding makes the "boom"
not the actual "explosion" Also there is no "explosive" energy and after researching found that you can put duct tape over the end it there is not barely enough "oomph" to blow the tape off the end

this makes it safe enough to have and fire off the bow without worry...and will be Hella cool (did i just say hella?)

the flour for "smoke" I thought was a nice touch. I need to figure out what I can use to make "flour pouches" that will be thin enough to "burst" with what little explosive energy is provided.

The cannon itself is PVC bore, and people carve or lathe block foam into the actual "cannon" that you see. This is going to be the hard part...as I am not "creative" with artsy type or carpentry type things...need to enlist some help with that

Thanks Russ for the post. At least someone cares.

For the rest of you, a question. This thread has OVER 7000 views, and only ONE other thread in 33 of this forum pages has more. Apparently my exploits are pretty popular.

However, I have to say I am a bit disappointed that no one except Russ and Catigle, and a FEW others few over the months, have had ANYTHING to say.

You do realize that I ENJOY READING YOUR COMMENTS as much as I hope you enjoy reading up on this adventure. You see, I check this forum often, and as a new guy trying to join this 'family" and I see my view count rise (not that I care about that, it just proves my point) and in some of my posts i have actually asked for feedback, opinions, and answers to questions I have, and I get very little. I realize I am doing something with my boat that is a little unusual, but thats what makes it fun and interesting.

I'm sorry if I am sounding a little "peeved" but as I said, I enjoy the responses, and there is rarely much for ME to read.

So I will ask, should I continue posting this madcap adventure with my VN23, or is this simply a forum to ask how to change your keel wire?

And I am not trying to sound like a dick, but I post on other forums, with other projects I have built (like my homemade diesel tractor) and this room is a tough audience so to speak.

I am sure RussMt and Catigle have more to do than view this thread 7000+ times so WHO are you other folks, what do you think, for gods sake sound off!! :?

meanwhile...I am working on raising the stays on the new 20ft lake mast. I want to go up about 2 2 1/2 feet.
We might be going out Thanksgiving day with my friend who lives on a big boat for our first 'cold weather" sail...and learn a bunch from him

Cheers mates
and apologies if needed...but like I said, I enjoy your responses when I get them
Dave

On the main Board the 'Composting Toilets' thread has you beat my >2000 views.

If you are seeking view gratification you might get a visual that isn't so appealing ......just sayin'

Hi catigale

I'm Definitely not seeking "View Gratification" not at all ...

Dialogue and idea swapping and camaraderie yes..responses of ANY kind yes...

I am building something unique with a VN23, and having a blast doing it...I like to post write ups as I enjoy the responses, and the critiques, and mostly the advice from the members...I have done the same with my tractor, and a few classic powerboats.

I guess last night I was beered up enough what I posted made it seem i was upset from "lack of attention" but that is far the case vs. lack of response of any kind. I mean if I just wanted to post pics ad write ups I could start a blog....but this is a VN23 forum. If I am out of bounds posting about my exploits to build up my VN23 then I apologize. I realize the other boats aren't Macgregors, but the topic of this thread is building up my macgregor

all i am saying is that no one really seems to have anything to say, neither good nor bad...its the lack of the interaction over many days even I am "complaining " about...and if I am only 2000 views behind the composting toilet thats fine....but like I said the other night. I wish people would say something back....anything..

Look, no hard feelings here mates....I just wish ya'll would take the time to post something back...advice, critique, "you're mad", "get outta here"....

or tell me the rules....post questions only...answer questions only, whatever....I can find another forum if I am seeking 'accolades"....I am here because it's all about my VN23...

Oh, and I bought a Kells 23 with trailer for $500 today :P

Friends still?
Dave

I say post as you please. I don't think the Internet is going to run out of space any time soon. I tend to post only on topics relating to my model of boat or general interest, but I enjoy reading about other people's mods.

Yea, you may have a boat problem.

Dave..added smilies to my last post, no offense meant. People are a little more chatty on the main board than the venture board and perhaps in the front room. I love hearing your exploits ..I was really worried you were going to get stuck with the first crack boat hull ..underestimating the Bubba market down there.

Not offended...hope I wasn't offending anyone either.

I am the one that is new here, and I do like to chat. I haven't really been to the other forums, as I am new to sailing and don't have much advice to give. And I do not have a composting toilet yet 8)

I try to chime in on Venture stuff when I can, and outboard advice I am good at.

Anyway, thanks guys. just say something once in a while...for example i thought for sure the working cannon would generate some "WTF's" 8)

So moving onward yes I bought a 23 foot Kells yesterday. He wanted $1200 obo, and I drove home with it for $500. I'm pretty good negotiator lol

here it is

It's a piece of work. But it came with 2 sets of sails look in excellent condition....may or not go to my lake mast, not sure. It's supposed to rain like balls all day today so I doubt I will get much done to it. I need to assess which way to go with it....I'm thinking about a quick re-furbish on the cheap and putting back on CL for around $1800 obo....the hull has seen better days, and the teak was painted years ago so now is rotten under the paint. If I can double my money and get another set of sails (that would make 2 lake sets, and 2 full main mast sets, and 1 hobie mainsail total) I will consider that a win

But the sails were almost new, and the rigging its missing I have plenty of spare stays and whatnot from the first two crackboats
and yes the rudder is missing....its Inside the boat for some reason.

As Stephen mentioned, the Venture forum doesn't get as much traffic. It's much cooler than the canon on Knot Sure. I would imagine you'll get some interesting responses from it. Might not fly well on coastal waters. Could get the authorities to look deeper at your boat (all equipment on board for regs).

That's actually a nice looking boat. Trailer looks to be in better shape than your crackboat one. You have to sail one of these boats with its real rigging. Don't put your lake mast on it.

Crackalackin :D
example i thought for sure the working cannon would generate some "WTF's"
That was about my thought.

I would say it would be somewhere well down the line behind glass bottom on my list of mods  and the water where I sail has 1" of visibility.

Saw this story lastnight on the local news and thought of you...

"More than 20 boats clog Norfolk waterway" http://wtkr.com/2013/11/25/more-than-20 ... -waterway/

A guy kept collecting old ships to make an artificial reef, has quite the collection of crack ships now :D

So Happy thanksgiving to those of us in this forum as well 8)

We all hate turkey here at our house so the menu is King Crab leg and 2 thick steaks for me and the boy (not a fan of crab myself, but the Admiral can process crab legs faster than one of those boats on the Bering sea)

I in the meantime am about to start powerwashing the Kells 23

No family for us....NY for xmas so Thanksgiving we don't do anything...I am the only one here in NC, and the Admirals parents don't celebrate anything and are a bit "weird" (Looong story)

if you get bored later check back for a pic of the kells cleaned up.....going to paint the hull with the same Blue on the other ones and mine (it seems to sell well)

Will also check the new sails to my current lake setup

And I had to do a "birthday shot" of captain morgans at my friends house when I borrowed his pressure washer...so maybe a few typos here :D :D I left my pressure washer out and it froze...need a new pump now DOH!!

So cheers mates! enjoy you and yours...

Happy Thanksgiving

Dave

Made a big tub of crab mashed potatoes:

7 lbs. potatoes
4 tuna-can sized cans crabmeat including juice
1 can condensed crab bisque -or- 2 sticks butter
Some heavy whipping cream
Salt
Pepper

slice potatoes 1/4 inch thick and boil until soft (30 minutes or so). Dump everything into a big bowl and beat together. Once everything is blended, add heavy whipping cream until you get a nice fluffy consistency. Salt to taste (be careful--hot foods can take more salt than cold), pepper to taste.

Also works with lobster or clams (use condensed clam chowder).
