My avatar is at Tailem bend along the Murray but it ranges from really picturesque spots like this where you climb the steps to a pub dining area and then camp the night below to huge cliffs, miles of natural bushland to just downtream from this spot Lake Alexandrina where you could probably spend a month exploring it and the Coorong with teeming birdlife.

Gramatically this is correct, yet there is a weakness in the English language that causes this to be read as a contrast. Rather I would see it as a dilemma, if a dilemma could have good alternatives instead of bad. Such choices, do I enjoy the pub, or the natural beauty or the wildlife, or ....... You are certainly fortunate.

One of my favorite holes is 24.5 miles upstream from the mouth of the Snake river. It's formed by a small stream not blocked by the usual railroad right of way as else where on these parts of the Snake or Columbia rivers. There's a small delta at the mouth which makes the entry exciting but not impossible for our shallow draft boats. The channel turns and twists a couple times for about 1/8 of a mile before ending in small basin completely surrounded on all four sides from wind and waves. One night I didn't even drop the anchor, I just ran the boat into a clump of of cattails which kept the boat from moving.
I'm planning to get my boat out this week end (almost full moon) and planning to head up that way, if your free let me know and I'll show you where this spot is.

Pretty hard to concentrate when thinking of being in spots like these.
We are very fortunate here that we can find spots where there is little chance of someone coming along and ruining the solitude for days or weeks.

I'm interested in hearing more about the Chesapeake area. Would anyone like to elaborate on the cruising / gunkholing opportunities?!

To answer the original query and I'm not going to do a map link as if you don't know where it is you'll never get there.

BVI's - Jost Van Dyke - Great White Harbor - complete with a night spent at Foxy's on the beach dancing 'till dawn - steel drums and all. Been there twice and both times are in the memory bank for a lifetime. Hope to make a third trip before the long trek is over.

This guy has spent a lifetime gunkholing the Chesapeake and has written it all down. A great read and he has outlined all the great spots including weekend trips, 5-day trips and 7-day trips. Well worth the money for the book.

I just got back from 5 days on lake Sacajawea on the Snake river and not a bad location for gunkholing. there are several bouy's to tie to and School House Steve tied his M up for a couple days. Sailing was ok with couple days in the high 90's and the water is 55 too cool for an enjoyable swin but did get wet and cooled off.
