I don't know about the UK but, in the US tips are considered compensation and are taxed as such. I can't imagine that it is much different on the right side of the pond.

Jim is Air Force. Don't wear whites. You would have to find a "squid". My blood...and all my USAF uniforms...run Air Force blue.
Cheers,
Jim

Anytime you take someone off shore for money, you are ultimately responsible for returning them to shore in the approximate state of health they were in upon departure. Very serious!
Very true. However....matters of compensation and licensing aside...you (as owner and "captain") are responsible for the safety of others aboard
YOUR craft anyway....at all times...regardless of circumstances. Compensation just adds another layer to the cake.
This is why we have an umbrella liability policy.

Well, yes, that's true. And if something should happen while you are on a standard pleasure cruise, your "umbrella policy" insurance will cover you.
But... if you took money to carry passengers - i.e. you were 'for hire' - then your insurance will *not* cover you - you'll be standing under an "umbrella policy" with no fabric on it. Any awards by the court will come out of your own pocket... with a very good chance of totally ruining your finances for life. Never, NEVER take money to carry passengers unless you are trained, equipped and properly insured for same.
If somebody wants to use my boat for a wedding, then the only way that's gonna happen is if I give that as a gift, and do it all for free. Yes, they can contribute decorations, food, etc. in order to make it a proper party, but none of that can seen as payment for the trip in any way, and anything extra goes home with them.

To reiterate, this is serious in the States, boys and girls. Dont hire your boat out without a masters license and all the trimmings.
Im taking "boat full of girls" to cuttyhunk in two weeks, all on my dime.

Yes, but my point is that while the acceptance of compensation will greatly add to your woes...in case of an accident...you are not absolved of responsibility/liability simply because you are doing it for free

True of course. My guess (not to constitute legal advice of any kind) is that this activity is covered under most general liability insurance policies at least.
Separate point - there was an incident on Lake Champlain in 2002 where an owner loaned a boat to a family member who took out 10 people onto the lake for July 4th fireworks, unballasted, and ended up with two kids dead. Alcohol involved of course as well. In my non-legal opinion the owner who loaned the boat under these circumstances shared a good portion of the assignable liability in this incident.

As the skipper/owner of my boat,i often tell people that as i am legally responsible for them they will follow my rules.I have no intention of charging myself and my boat out,i will however at my cost transport myself and my boat to the location,i have indicated that unless they want a plain boat, the brides father could donate some ribbons balloons and flowers for the occcasion.I have told them that i will not accesept payment,i shall supply myself,my boat and if they want to decorate it then they are most welcome to supply me with the ribbons etc.
the bride to be has said that she loves the idea,so im a big softee

SPARKING should be done only *after* the ceremony, using their own power, and hopefully in private.
